Precepts of ceremonial purification

  • 1. And the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, saying:
  • 2. This is the ordinance of the law which the LORD hath commanded, saying, Tell the children of Israel, that they bring thee a red heifer, perfect, in which there is no blemish, and upon which no yoke has been put.
  • 3. And you shall give her to Eleazar the priest, who will take her out of the camp and slaughter her before him.
  • 4. Then Eleazar the priest will take some of his blood with his finger and sprinkle it before the tabernacle of the congregation seven times.
  • 5. And the heifer will be burned before their eyes; their skin, and their flesh, and their blood, with their dung, will be burned.
  • 6. And the priest shall take cedar wood, and hyssop, and scarlet, and cast them into the fire wherein the heifer burns.
  • 7. Then the priest will wash his clothes and his flesh with water; and then he will enter the camp, and will be unclean until the evening.
  • 8. And he that burned it shall wash his clothes with water, and bathe his flesh with water; and it will be unclean until the evening.
  • 9. A clean man shall gather the ashes of the heifer and place them outside the camp in a clean place, and they shall be kept for the congregation of the children of Israel for the water of separation; it is for atonement.
  • 10. Whoever gathers the heifer's ashes will wash his clothes and be unclean until evening; This shall be a statute for ever for the children of Israel and for the stranger who sojourns among them.
  • 11. Anyone who touches the corpse of a human soul will be unclean for seven days.
  • 12. He will purify himself with that water on the third day, and on the seventh day he will be clean; but if he does not purify himself on the third day, he will not be cleansed on the seventh day.
  • 13. Anyone who touches a dead human body and does not purify himself defiles the tabernacle of the LORD; and such a soul will be cut off from Israel; because the water of separation was not sprinkled on him; it will be unclean; his filthiness is still in him.
  • 14. This is the law when someone dies in a tent: everyone who enters the tent and everyone in it will be unclean seven days.
  • 15. Also any open vessel, over which there is no cloth tied, will be unclean.
  • 16. And whoever in the field touches a dead person, any human corpse, or any human bone, or a grave, will be unclean seven days.
  • 17. For the unclean they will take the ashes of the burning of atonement, and running water will run over it in a vessel.
  • 18. And a clean man shall take hyssop and dip it in that water and sprinkle it on the tent and on all the vessels, and on the people who were there, and on anyone who touches the bones, or anyone who is dead, or any grave .
  • 19. And he shall sprinkle the clean on the unclean on the third day and on the seventh day; and on the seventh day he will purify him and wash his clothes and bathe his body with water, and in the evening he will be clean.
  • 20. But whoever is unclean and does not purify, his soul will be cut off from the congregation, because he has defiled the sanctuary of the LORD; the water of separation was not sprinkled on him; It's filthy.
  • 21. And this shall be a statute unto them for ever: he that sprinkleth the water of separation shall wash his clothes; and whoever touches the water of separation will be unclean until the evening.
  • 22. Everything that the unclean touches will be unclean; and the soul that touches it will be unclean until the evening.
