  • 1. “When two men get involved in a fight, they must take the case to court, and the judges will decide the matter, acquitting the innocent and condemning the guilty.
  • 2. If the guilty person deserves to be flogged, the judge will order him to lie down and be flogged in the presence of everyone, with the number of lashes that his crime deserves,
  • 3. but never exceeding forty lashes. Flogging beyond that would be a public humiliation for an Israelite.
  • 4. “Do not muzzle the ox while it is threshing the grain.
  • 5. “If two brothers live together, and one of them dies without leaving children, the widow will not marry someone outside the family. The deceased's brother will marry her and fulfill his duty as a brother-in-law.
  • 6. The first son she has will bear the name of her deceased brother, so that his name will not be erased in Israel.
  • 7. “However, if the brother does not want to marry the widow, she will go to the city leaders at the city gate and say, 'My husband's brother is refusing to continue his brother's name in Israel . He doesn't want to do his brother-in-law's duty to me.'
  • 8. Then the leaders of the city will call him and speak to him. If he keeps saying, 'I don't want to marry her,'
  • 9. the widow will approach him in the presence of the leaders, take off one of his sandals, spit in his face and say: 'This is what happens to someone who does not want to continue his brother's family'.
  • 10. And the family of this man will be known in Israel as 'the family of the barefoot one'.
  • 11. “If two men are fighting and the wife of one of them comes to free her husband from the attacker, grabbing him by the private parts,
  • 12. cut off her hand. Have no mercy.
  • 13. “Don't have two different weights in your bag, one heavier and one lighter.
  • 14. Don't have two different types of measurements in your house, one larger and one smaller.
  • 15. Have fair and accurate weights and measurements, so that you may live a long time in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.
  • 16. For the Lord your God hates anyone who acts dishonestly and deceitfully.
  • 17. “Remember what the Amalekites did to you on the way when they left Egypt.
  • 18. When you were tired and exhausted, they met you on the way and attacked everyone behind, without fearing God.
  • 19. When the Lord your God gives you rest from all your enemies around you in the land He gives you as an inheritance, you will completely erase the memory of the Amalekites from under heaven. Don't forget that!
