  • 1. When Rachel saw that she bore Jacob no children, she was jealous of her sister, and said to Jacob, Give me children, or I will die.
  • 2. Then Jacob raged against Rachel and said, Am I in the place of God, who withheld from you the fruit of your womb?
  • 3. She answered: Behold my servant Bilhah; have intercourse with her, that she may give birth on my knees, and that I may also obtain children through her.
  • 4. He gave him Bilhah, his servant, as his wife; and Jacob had intercourse with her.
  • 5. Bilhah conceived and bore Jacob a son.
  • 6. Then Rachel said: God judged me and also heard my voice, and gave me a son. That's why he called him Dan.
  • 7. Bilhah, Rachel's servant, conceived again and bore Jacob a second son.
  • 8. Then said Rachel: I had a divine fight with my sister, and I prevailed. And he called him Naphtali.
  • 9. When Leah saw that she had stopped having children, she took her servant Zilpah and gave her to Jacob as his wife.
  • 10. And Zilpah Leah's maid bare Jacob a son.
  • 11. Then Leah said: Happiness comes. And he called him Gad.
  • 12. Zilpah, Leah's servant, conceived and bore Jacob a second son.
  • 13. Leah said: For my happiness! Because women will call me happy. And he called him Asher.
  • 14. At the time of the wheat harvest, Reuben went out and found some mandrakes in the field, and brought them to Leah, his mother. Rachel said to Leah: Now, give me some of your son's mandrakes.
  • 15. But she said to him: It was a small thing that you took my husband, will you also take my son's mandrakes? Rachel answered: Because he will lie with you tonight because of your son's mandrakes.
  • 16. Now when Jacob came in from the field in the afternoon, Leah met him and said, Lie with me, for I have certainly hired you for the price of my son's mandrakes. And he slept with her that night.
  • 17. God listened to Leah, who conceived and gave birth to Jacob's fifth son.
  • 18. Leah said, God has given me my wages, because I have given my servant to my husband. And he called him Issachar.
  • 19. Leah conceived again and bore Jacob his sixth son.
  • 20. Leah said: God has given me a great dowry; This time my husband will live with me, for I have borne him six sons. And he called him Zebulun.
  • 21. Then she gave birth to a daughter, whom she named Dinah.
  • 22. God remembered Rachel; God heard her and opened her womb.
  • 23. She conceived and gave birth to a son and said: God has removed my shame.
  • 24. And he called his name Joseph, saying, The Lord will add another son to me.

Jacob's flocks increase

  • 25. When Rachel gave birth to Joseph, Jacob said to Laban, Send me away, so that I may go to my own place and to my own land.
  • 26. Give me my wives and my children, for whom I have served you, and let me go; for you know the service I rendered you.
  • 27. Laban said, If now I have found grace in your sight, stay with me, for I have seen that the Lord has blessed me for your sake.
  • 28. And he said, Assign me your salary, and I will give it to you.
  • 29. Jacob said to him, You know how I have served you and how your cattle have passed with me.
  • 30. For you had little before I came, and it has increased in abundance; the Lord has blessed you for my work. So now, when will I also work for my house?
  • 31. Laban asked: What shall I give you? Jacob answered, Thou shalt give me nothing; If you do for me what I am going to tell you, I will go back to pasture and keep your flock.
  • 32. Today I will pass through all your flock and separate from them every sheep spotted and speckled with black, and every sheep speckled with white; and as many as have black spots on them, those will be my wages.
  • 33. Thus, my justice will answer for me in the future, when you come to check my salary; everything that is not spotted and speckled with black among the goats, and speckled with white among the sheep, that one will be stolen if it is found with me.
  • 34. And Laban said, All right. Be as you say.
  • 35. Then on that same day Laban separated the goats that were striped and speckled with black, all the goats that were spotted and speckled with white, all that had black spots, and all that were speckled with white, and everything that was spotted between the sheep; and gave them into the hands of his children.
  • 36. And he set three days' journey between himself and Jacob; and Jacob fed the rest of Laban's flocks.
  • 37. Jacob took green sticks of poplar, hazel and chestnut and made white slits in them, revealing the whiteness of the sticks,
  • 38. and he placed the sticks that he had peeled in front of the flocks, in the water troughs, in the water trough where the flocks came to drink; and they conceived when they came to drink.
  • 39. The flocks conceived before the rods and the sheep gave birth to striped, speckled and spotted offspring.
  • 40. And Jacob separated the lambs and made them look at the striped sheep and at all the black sheep in Laban's flock. And he kept his flocks apart and did not mix them with Laban's flock.
  • 41. In the days when the strong animals conceived, Jacob placed the rods in the water troughs, before the eyes of the animals, so that they conceived before the rods;
  • 42. but when the animals were weak, he did not put them. So the weak went to Laban, and the strong to Jacob.
  • 43. Thus, the man became extremely great, he became very rich, and he had many flocks, male servants, female servants, camels and donkeys.
