Elijah is fed by ravens

  • 1. Now Elijah the Tishbite, who was from Gilead, said to Ahab, "As surely as the Lord, the God of Israel, whom I serve, there will be no rain or dew for years to come, except at my word."
  • 2. Then the word of the Lord came to Elijah, saying:
  • 3. “Leave here and go east. Hide by the brook Cherith, east of the Jordan.
  • 4. You will drink from the brook, and I have commanded the ravens to feed you there.”
  • 5. And he did according to the word of the Lord. He went and settled by the brook Cherith, east of the Jordan.
  • 6. The ravens brought bread and meat in the morning and bread and meat in the afternoon, and he drank water from the brook.
  • 7. But after some time, the brook dried up for lack of rain.

The Widow of Zarephath

  • 8. Then the word of the Lord came to Elijah, saying:
  • 9. “Arise, go to Sarepta, which belongs to Sidon, and stay there. I ordered a widow from that place to support him.”
  • 10. Then he arose and went to Sarepta. Arriving at the entrance to the city, he found a widow who was gathering sticks. He called her and said, "Please bring me some water in a pitcher for me to drink."
  • 11. As she was going to fetch water, he called her and said, "Please bring me a piece of bread in your hand too."
  • 12. But she replied, “As surely as the Lord your God lives, I have no bread. I only have a handful of flour in a jar and a little oil in a jar. I am gathering some sticks to go and prepare a meal for myself and my son so that we can eat it and die.”
  • 13. Elijah, however, said to her, ′′ Don't be afraid. Go and do as you are told. But first make me a little cake and bring it to me, and then make something for you and your son.
  • 14. For this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: 'The jar of flour will not run out, and the cruse of oil will not run dry, until the day the Lord sends rain on the earth.'
  • 15. So she went and did as Elijah had said. And so he and the woman and their household ate for many days.
  • 16. The jar of flour did not run out, and the cruse of oil did not run out, according to the word of the Lord spoken by Elijah.
  • 17. After that, the son of the woman who owned the house fell ill. His illness got worse until there was no longer any breath left in him.
  • 18. Then the woman said to Elijah, “What do you have against me, O man of God? Did you come to me to remind me of my sins and make my son die?”
  • 19. He said to her, "Give me your son." He took him from her arms, carried him upstairs where he was staying, and laid him on his own bed.
  • 20. Then he cried out to the Lord, “O Lord my God, did you also bring affliction on the widow I am staying with, by killing her son?”
  • 21. Then he lay down on the boy three times and cried out to the Lord, "O Lord my God, I pray that this boy may come back to life."
  • 22. The Lord heard the voice of Elijah, and life came back to the boy, and he lived.
  • 23. Elijah took the boy, came down from the room at the top of the house, gave him to the mother and said, “See, your son is alive!”
  • 24. Then the woman said to Elijah, "Now I know that you are a man of God and that the word of the Lord in your mouth is true."
