Joseph and hunger

  • 1. Joseph went to tell Pharaoh, “My father and my brothers, with their flocks and flocks, their goods and everything they have, have come from the land of Canaan and are in Goshen.”
  • 2. He chose five of his brothers and presented them to Pharaoh.
  • 3. Pharaoh asked them, “What is your occupation?” They replied, “Your servants are sheep shepherds, like our ancestors.”
  • 4. They also said to Pharaoh, “We have come to dwell as foreigners in this land, because there is no pasture for the flock of your servants, for the famine is severe in the land of Canaan. Now therefore, we ask that your servants may dwell in the land of Goshen.”
  • 5. Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Your father and your brothers came to you,
  • 6. and Egypt is before you; settle your father and your brothers in the best part of the land. Let them dwell in the land of Goshen. If you know of capable men among them, make them stewards of my flocks.”
  • 7. And Joseph brought his father Jacob, and presented him to Pharaoh. Jacob blessed Pharaoh.
  • 8. Pharaoh asked him, “How old are you?”
  • 9. Jacob replied, ′′ The years of my pilgrimage are one hundred and thirty. Few and bad were the years of my life, and they do not reach the years of my forefathers in the land of their pilgrimages.”
  • 10. And Jacob blessed Pharaoh and departed from his presence.
  • 11. Joseph settled his father and his brothers and gave them possessions in Egypt, in the best part of the land, in the region of Ramesses, as Pharaoh had commanded.
  • 12. And Joseph supported his father, his brothers and all his father's family with food, according to the number of his children.
  • 13. There was no bread in all the land, for the famine was very severe, and both Egypt and Canaan were faint because of the famine.
  • 14. Joseph collected all the money that was in Egypt and in the land of Canaan, in exchange for the cereals that the people bought, and deposited it in Pharaoh's house.
  • 15. When the money was gone in the land of Egypt and in the land of Canaan, all the Egyptians came to Joseph and said, “Give us bread; why should we die in your presence for lack of money?”
  • 16. Joseph replied, ′′ Give me your flocks, and I will give them to you for food, if you lack money.
  • 17. Then they brought their flocks to Joseph; and Joseph gave them bread in exchange for horses, in exchange for flocks of sheep and oxen, and for donkeys; and he fed them with bread that year in exchange for all their livestock.
  • 18. When that year was over, they came to Joseph in the second year and said to him, “We will not hide you from our lord, who, when the money is gone, our flocks are not left with you alone; we have nothing left but our bodies and our lands.
  • 19. Why should we die before your eyes, both we and our lands? Buy us and our land for bread, and we and our land will be servants to Pharaoh; give us seed, that we may live and not die, and our lands not become desolate.”
  • 20. So Joseph bought all the land of Egypt for Pharaoh; because the Egyptians sold each one his field, because the famine prevailed over them; and the land became Pharaoh's.
  • 21. And as for the people, he brought them into the cities on one end and the other end of the borders of Egypt.
  • 22. The only land he did not buy was that of the priests, because they had a portion of food determined by Pharaoh, and they ate the portion that Pharaoh gave them; therefore they did not sell their land.
  • 23. Joseph said to the people, “Today I bought you and your land for Pharaoh; here is seed for you to sow the ground.
  • 24. When you reap the fifth part for Pharaoh, the four parts shall be yours, to sow the fields, and to sustain you, for your houses, and for your children ".
  • 25. And they said, “You have saved our lives! May we find favor in the eyes of our lord, and we will be servants to Pharaoh.”
  • 26. So Joseph established a law, valid to this day, that the fifth part of the crops would belong to Pharaoh, except that of the lands of the priests, which, because they belonged to Pharaoh, were not subject to that law.
  • 27. Israel settled in the land of Egypt, in the region of Goshen, where they acquired property and were fruitful and multiplied greatly.
  • 28. Jacob lived seventeen years in Egypt, and the life of Jacob was one hundred and forty-seven years.
  • 29. As the time drew near for Israel to die, he called his son Joseph and said to him, “If it is your will, please put your hand under my thigh and do me a favor. Promise me that you will deal kindly and faithfully by not burying me in Egypt.
  • 30. When I rest with my fathers, take me out of Egypt and bury me in their tomb.” Joseph replied, "I will do as you said."
  • 31. Jacob insisted: “Swear to me!” And Joseph swore to him. Then Israel leaned against the headboard.
