Tatenai's letter to Darius

  • 1. The prophet Haggai and the prophet Zechariah, a descendant of Iddo, prophesied to the Jews of Judah and Jerusalem in the name of the God of Israel, who was with them.
  • 2. Then Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel and Jeshua son of Jozadak began to rebuild the temple of God in Jerusalem, and the prophets of God were with them, supporting them.
  • 3. Tatenai, governor of the province west of the Euphrates, Shetar-Bozenai and his companions came to them and asked: “Who gave you permission to rebuild this temple and build these walls?
  • 4. What is the name of the men who are carrying out this construction?”
  • 5. But the eyes of their God were on the leaders of the Jews, and they were not stopped from working until a report was sent to Darius and an official response was received.
  • 6. This is the content of the letter which Tatenai, governor of the province west of the Euphrates, Shetar-Bozenai and their companions, the officials of the province west of the Euphrates, sent to King Darius.
  • 7. The report said: “To King Darius: We wish Your Majesty peace and prosperity.
  • 8. “We wish to inform Your Majesty that we have gone to the province of Judah, to the temple of the great God. It is being rebuilt with large stones, and beams are being fixed to the walls. The work is being carried out diligently and progressing rapidly.
  • 9. Then we asked the leaders: Who gave you permission to rebuild this temple and build these walls?
  • 10. We also ask for your names to inform Your Majesty.
  • 11. “This was the answer we received:
  • 12. “We are servants of the God of heaven and earth, and we are rebuilding the temple that was built many years ago, the temple that a great king of Israel built and finished.
  • 13. “But because our ancestors provoked the anger of the God of heaven, he delivered them into the hands of King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon, who destroyed this temple and exiled the people to Babylon.
  • 14. “However, in the first year of the reign of King Cyrus of Babylon, the king issued a decree to rebuild this house of God.
  • 15. “He also brought from the temple of Babylon the gold and silver utensils of the house of God, which Nebuchadnezzar had taken from the temple in Jerusalem and carried to the temple of Babylon. King Cyrus entrusted these utensils to a man named Sheshbazar, whom he appointed governor,
  • 16. and said to him, 'Take these utensils and put them in the temple in Jerusalem, and rebuild the house of God in its proper place.'
  • 17. “Therefore, if it pleases the king, let a search be made in the royal archives of Babylon to see whether King Cyrus issued a decree to rebuild the house of God in Jerusalem. We await the king’s decision on this matter.”
