Ciro helps exiles return

  • 1. In the first year of the reign of Cyrus, king of Persia, so that the word of the Lord spoken by Jeremiah might be fulfilled, the Lord touched the heart of Cyrus, king of Persia, to issue a proclamation and spread it throughout his kingdom, with the following words:
  • 2. “This is what Cyrus, king of Persia, says: The Lord, the God of heaven, has handed over to me all the kingdoms of the earth and has commissioned me to build a temple for him in Jerusalem, which is in Judah.
  • 3. Whoever among you belongs to his people, may his God be with him, and let him go to Jerusalem in Judah to rebuild the temple of the Lord, the God of Israel, the God who is in Jerusalem.
  • 4. And that every survivor, wherever he lives, receives help from those who live in that place, whether in silver, gold, goods, animals or voluntary offerings for the temple of God in Jerusalem.”
  • 5. Then the leaders of the families of Judah and Benjamin, the priests and the Levites, all those whose hearts God had touched, decided to go to Jerusalem to rebuild the temple of the Lord.
  • 6. And all their neighbors helped them, bringing them silver and gold utensils, goods, animals and valuable gifts, in addition to all the freewill offerings they made.
  • 7. Furthermore, King Cyrus ordered to bring the utensils belonging to the temple of the Lord, which Nebuchadnezzar had taken from Jerusalem and placed in the temple of his god.
  • 8. Cyrus, king of Persia, ordered them to be handed over to the treasurer Mitredath, who recorded them and handed them over to Sheshbazar, governor of Judah.
  • 9. The list was as follows: thirty golden bowls, a thousand silver bowls, twenty-nine silver pots,
  • 10. thirty bowls of gold, four hundred and ten bowls of silver, and a thousand other objects.
  • 11. In total, there were five thousand and four hundred utensils of gold and silver. Sheshbazar took everything with him when the exiles returned from Babylon to Jerusalem.
