Promises to the Lord

  • 1. Then Moses spoke to the leaders of the tribes of Israel and said, “The Lord has commanded this:
  • 2. When a man makes a vow to the Lord or makes an oath binding himself with a commitment, he cannot break his word. He must do everything he promised.
  • 3. If a woman makes a vow to the Lord while she is still young and lives in her father's house,
  • 4. and her father hears her vow or the oath with which she has bound herself to a pledge, and says nothing about it, then all her vows will be valid and the entire pledge with which she has bound herself will be binding.
  • 5. However, if her father disapproves of her on the day he hears the vow, none of the vows or commitments she has bound herself to will be valid. The Lord will forgive her because her father disapproved of her.
  • 6. If she gets married and makes vows or oaths binding herself to commitments,
  • 7. and her husband listens and says nothing about it on the day he hears them, then her vows will be valid and the commitments with which she has bound herself will be binding.
  • 8. But if on the day her husband hears them, he disapproves of them, then the vows and commitments with which she has bound herself will not be valid. The Lord will forgive her.
  • 9. The vow of a widow or a woman who has been divorced, everything involving commitments, will be binding on her.
  • 10. If a woman, living in her husband's house, makes a vow or binds herself to a commitment,
  • 11. and her husband listens and says nothing about it, then all her vows will be valid and all the engagements with which she has bound herself will be binding.
  • 12. However, if her husband cancels them on the day he hears them, nothing she has promised or committed to will be valid. The Lord will forgive her.
  • 13. The husband has the authority to confirm or annul any vow or commitment his wife makes.
  • 14. But if the husband says nothing about a vow or commitment that imposes restrictions on him,
  • 15. the day he finds out about this, he will be obliged to fulfill all his vows and commitments. The husband has the authority to confirm or annul the vows and commitments that his wife makes.
  • 16. These are the laws which the Lord has established concerning vows and pledges between a man and his wife, and between a father and his daughter in her youth, while she is still in her father's house.
