Ruth in the field of Boaz

  • 1. Naomi had a relative on her husband's side, a rich and influential man named Boaz, who belonged to the clan of Elimelech.
  • 2. Ruth the Moabite said to Naomi, “I would like to go and gather grain in the fields of someone who would allow it.” Naomi replied, “Go, my daughter.”
  • 3. Then Ruth went and began to gather grain after the reapers. By chance, she entered the part of the field that belonged to Boaz, who was from the clan of Elimelech.
  • 4. At that moment, Boaz arrived in Bethlehem and greeted the harvesters, saying: “May the Lord be with you all!” And they replied, “May the Lord bless you!”
  • 5. Boaz asked the harvest foreman, “Who is this girl?”
  • 6. The foreman replied, “She is a Moabite who returned from Moab with Naomi.
  • 7. She asked permission to gather grain among the sheaves, behind the reapers. She arrived early and has been working tirelessly until now, except for a brief rest.”
  • 8. Then Boaz said to Ruth, “My daughter, stay here in my field. Don't go elsewhere to harvest. Stay close to my servants.
  • 9. Watch where the men are reaping and follow the girls who are reaping. I'll give the boys instructions so they don't bother you. And when you’re thirsty, drink the water the boys bring.”
  • 10. Ruth bowed down to Boaz, face to the ground, and asked, “Why are you showing so much kindness to me, a foreigner?”
  • 11. Boaz replied: “I heard about everything you have done for your mother-in-law after the death of your husband: how you left your family and your homeland to come and live with an unknown people.
  • 12. May the Lord reward you for what you have done! May you receive a generous reward from the Lord, the God of Israel, under whose wings you came to seek refuge!”
  • 13. Ruth said, “May I continue to find favor in your eyes, my lord! You encouraged me and consoled me, even though I was not one of your servants.”
  • 14. During the meal, Boaz said to Ruth, “Come here! Take a piece of bread and dip it in vinegar.” When she sat among the reapers, Boaz offered her roasted grain. She ate until she was satisfied and still had leftovers.
  • 15. When Ruth got up to go back to work, Boaz gave orders to his servants: “Let her glean from the sheaves and don’t rebuke her!
  • 16. Also, let some ears fall on purpose so that she can gather them, and do not hinder her.”
  • 17. So Ruth harvested in the field until evening. Then she threshed what she had harvested, and the quantity was almost a sack of barley.
  • 18. Ruth took what she had gathered back to the city, and her mother-in-law saw the amount she had brought. Furthermore, Naomi gave Ruth what was left over from her meal.
  • 19. Naomi asked Ruth, “Where did you harvest today? Where did you work? Blessed be he who cared for you!” Then Ruth told Naomi where she had worked: “The name of the man I worked with today is Boaz.”
  • 20. Naomi exclaimed, “May he be blessed by the Lord, who has never stopped being kind to the living and the dead!” And he added: “This man is our relative, he is one of our rescuers!”
  • 21. Ruth the Moabite said, “He even told me to stay with his harvesters until all the harvest was finished!”
  • 22. Then Naomi advised Ruth, her daughter-in-law: “You'd better continue working with his servants, my daughter. In another field, they could bother you.”
  • 23. So Ruth remained working with Boaz's servants, gathering ears of grain until the end of the barley and wheat harvest. And she continued to live with her mother-in-law.
