  • 1. Lord, why are you so distant? Why do you hide in times of trouble?
  • 2. In his arrogance, the wicked persecutes the poor, who are caught in his schemes.
  • 3. The wicked boasts of his own greed, and in his greed he curses and despises the Lord.
  • 4. In his presumption the wicked does not seek him; In all your plans there is no place for God.
  • 5. The ways of the wicked always prosper; he is superior to their understanding, they mock all his adversaries.
  • 6. He says in his heart: “Nothing will shake me! No harm will come to me, neither to me nor to my descendants.”
  • 7. His mouth is full of curses, deceptions and threats; violence and wickedness are on their tongue.
  • 8. He hides around villages; in ambushes he kills the innocent, seeking out his victims in secret.
  • 9. He lurks like a lion in his den; lies in wait to catch those in need; he catches the needy and drags him into his net.
  • 10. He crouches, he bows, and his victims fall into his power.
  • 11. He says in his heart: “God has forgotten; he hid his face and he will never see it.”
  • 12. Rise up, Lord! Raise your hand, O God! Don't forget those in need.
  • 13. Why does the wicked insult God, saying in his heart: “God will not call me to account”?
  • 14. But you see the affliction and the pain; observe them and take them into your hands. Their victim gives himself to you; you are the shelter of the orphan.
  • 15. Break the arm of the wicked and the wicked, demand an account of their impiety until nothing is found of it.
  • 16. The Lord is king forever and ever; the wicked nations have disappeared from their land.
  • 17. You, Lord, hear the cry of those in need; you encourage them and answer their cry.
  • 18. You defend the orphan and the oppressed, so that man, formed from the dust, terrorizes them no more.
