Proverbs of Agur

  • 1. The sayings of Agur, son of Jacob, the oracle that uttered. Agur said to Itiel, Itiel and Ucal:
  • 2. “I am the most foolish of men, and I do not have the understanding of a human being.
  • 3. I have not learned wisdom, and I have no knowledge of the Holy One.
  • 4. Who ascended to heaven and came down? Who held the wind in his hands? Who tied the waters to a garment? Who established all the ends of the earth? What is your name, and what is your son's name? Tell me if you know!
  • 5. Every word of God is pure; he is a shield to those who trust in him.
  • 6. Add nothing to his words, lest he rebuke you and you be found a liar.
  • 7. Two things I ask of you; Don't deny it, before I die:
  • 8. Keep falsehood and lies away from me; give me neither poverty nor riches; give me only the bread that I need.
  • 9. Lest he be full, and deny thee, and say, Who is the Lord? Or that, impoverished, he will not steal and profane the name of God.
  • 10. Do not accuse the servant before his master, lest he curse you and lest you become guilty.
  • 11. There is a generation that curses its father and does not bless its mother.
  • 12. There is a generation that is pure in its own eyes, but has never been washed from its filth.
  • 13. There is a generation whose eyes are lofty, and their eyelids are lifted up.
  • 14. There is a generation whose teeth are swords, and whose jaws are knives, to consume from the earth the afflicted, and the needy among men.
  • 15. The leech has two daughters, namely: Dá and Dá. You can never have enough of these three things; and with the fourth they never say: Enough!
  • 16. The grave; the sterile mother; the land that is not satisfied with water; and the fire that never says: Enough!
  • 17. The eyes of him who mocks his father and despises obedience to his mother will be plucked out by the ravens of the brook and the eagle's children will eat them.
  • 18.There are three things that amaze me, and the fourth, that I do not know:
  • 19. The path of the eagle in the sky; the path of the snake on the rock; the path of the ship in the middle of the sea; and the way of a man with a maiden.
  • 20. The way of an adulterous woman is like this: She eats and wipes her mouth, and says: I have done no iniquity.
  • 21. Three things have trembled throughout the earth, and there are four that cannot bear:
  • 22. The servant when he reigns; the fool when he is full of bread;
  • 23. A woman who is bored when she is married; and the servant when she becomes heir to her mistress.
  • 24. There are four things that are small on earth, but are extremely wise:
  • 25. Ants, a people without strength, but who prepare their food in summer;
  • 26. The voles, a people without power, but who make their home in the rocks;
  • 27. The locusts, which have no king, but all walk in groups;
  • 28. The spider that you catch with your hands is still in the palaces of kings.
  • 29. There are three who have very firm steps, yes, four who walk very safely:
  • 30. The lion, the strongest among animals, which flees from no one;
  • 31. The rooster; the goat; and the king at the head of his army.
  • 32. If you have acted foolishly and exalted yourself, or if you have planned evil, put your hand over your mouth.
  • 33. For as the squeezing of milk produces butter, and the squeezing of the nose produces blood, so the squeezing of anger produces strife.
