Moses makes water come out of the rock

  • 1. The children of Israel, the whole congregation, came to the wilderness of Zin in the first month, and the people remained in Kadesh; and Miriam died there and was buried there.
  • 2. And there was no water for the congregation; Then they gathered together against Moses and against Aaron.
  • 3. And the people contended with Moses, and spake, saying, We had rather expired when our brethren expired before the LORD!
  • 4. And why have you brought the congregation of the LORD into this wilderness, that we and our beasts should die here?
  • 5. And why did you bring us up from Egypt, to bring us to this evil place? In a place where no sowing is done, there are no figs, no vines, no pomegranates, not even water to drink.
  • 6. Then Moses and Aaron went from before the congregation to the door of the tent of meeting, and fell upon their faces; and the glory of the LORD appeared to them.
  • 7. And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying:
  • 8. Take the rod and gather the congregation together, you and Aaron your brother, and speak to the rock before their eyes, and it will give its water; So you will draw water for them from the rock and give it to the congregation and their animals to drink.
  • 9. Then Moses took the rod from before the LORD, as he had commanded him.
  • 10. And Moses and Aaron gathered themselves together to the rock, and said unto them, Hear now, ye rebels! Shall we draw water for you from this rock?
  • 11. Then Moses lifted up his hand and struck the rock twice with his rod, and much water came out; and the congregation and their animals drank.
  • 12. And the LORD said unto Moses and Aaron, Because ye believed me not to sanctify me before the children of Israel, therefore ye shall not bring this congregation into the land which I have given them.
  • 13. These are the waters of Meribah, because the children of Israel contended with the LORD; and the LORD sanctified himself in them.

The king of Edom denies passage to the Israelites

  • 14. And Moses sent messengers from Kadesh to the king of Edom, saying, Thus says your brother Israel: You know all the troubles that have befallen us;
  • 15. how our fathers went down to Egypt, and we stayed there for many days, and how the Egyptians mistreated us and our fathers.
  • 16. So we cried out to the LORD, and he heard our voice and sent an angel and brought us out of Egypt; and behold, we are in Kadesh, a city at the extreme end of your borders.
  • 17. We beg you to let us pass through your land; We will not go through the fields or through the vineyards, nor will we drink water from the wells; we will go along the royal road; We will not turn to the right or to the left until we pass through your borders.
  • 18. But Edom answered him, Thou shalt not pass by me, lest I come out with the sword to meet thee.
  • 19. And the children of Israel said unto him, We will go up by the road; and if I and my cattle drink of your waters, then I will give the price for them; I will not pass by alone, without anything.
  • 20. But he said, Thou shalt not pass over. And Edom went out to meet a large people with a strong hand.
  • 21. So Edom refused to give Israel passage through its border; therefore Israel turned away from him.
  • 22. And the children of Israel departed from Kadesh, the whole congregation, to mount Hor.

Aaron's death

  • 23. And the LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron in mount Hor, in the borders of the land of Edom, saying:
  • 24. Aaron will be gathered to his people, for he will not enter the land that I have given to the children of Israel, because you rebelled against my word at the waters of Meribah.
  • 25. Take Aaron and his son Eleazar and bring them up to Mount Hor;
  • 26. and strip Aaron of his clothes, and clothe Eleazar his son with them; because Aaron will be taken and will die there.
  • 27. And Moses did as the LORD commanded him; and they went up to Mount Hor in the sight of all the congregation.
  • 28. And Moses stripped Aaron of his clothes, and put them on Eleazar his son; and Aaron died there, on the top of the mountain; and Moses and Eleazar came down from the mountain.
  • 29. And the whole congregation, the whole house of Israel, wept for Aaron thirty days.
