Sending explorers to Canaan

  • 1. The Lord spoke to Moses, saying:
  • 2. Send men to spy out the land of Canaan, which I give to the children of Israel; from every tribe of their fathers you shall send a man, each one being a prince among them.
  • 3. And Moses sent them out of the wilderness of Paran, according to the word of the Lord; all those men were heads of the children of Israel.
  • 4. And these are their names: of the tribe of Reuben, Shammua, son of Zaccur;
  • 5. Of the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat the son of Hori;
  • 6. Of the tribe of Judah, Caleb, son of Jephunneh;
  • 7. Of the tribe of Issachar, Igal, son of Joseph;
  • 8. From the tribe of Ephraim, Hosea son of Nun;
  • 9. Of the tribe of Benjamin, Palti, son of Rafu;
  • 10. Of the tribe of Zebulun, Gadiel son of Sodi;
  • 11. Of the tribe of Joseph, of the tribe of Manasseh, Gadi, son of Susi;
  • 12. Of the tribe of Dan, Ammiel son of Gemali;
  • 13. Of the tribe of Asher, Shetur, son of Michael;
  • 14. Of the tribe of Naphtali, Nabi, son of Vofsi;
  • 15. From the tribe of Gad, Geuel, son of Machi.
  • 16. These are the names of the men whom Moses sent to spy out that land; and Hosea son of Nun Moses called Joshua.
  • 17. And Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan, saying to them, Go up from here to the Negev, and then go up into the mountain;
  • 18. And see what the land is, and the people who dwell therein, whether they are strong or weak, whether they are few or many;
  • 19. And such is the land in which he dwells, whether it be good or bad; and that such are the cities in which he dwells, whether in camps or in fortresses;
  • 20. And what is the land like, whether it is fertile or barren, whether there are trees in it or not. Be strong, and take of the fruit of the land. And those days were the days of the first fruits of the grapes.
  • 21. So they went up and spied the land, from the wilderness of Zin to Rehob, on the way to Hamath.
  • 22. And they went up to the Negeb, and came to Hebron, where Ahiman, Shesai, and Talmai, the sons of Anak, were; Now, Hebron was built seven years before Zoan, in Egypt.
  • 23. And they came to the valley of Eshcol, and from there they cut a branch of vine with a bunch of grapes, and two men brought them on a line, as well as pomegranates and figs.
  • 24. That place was called the valley of Eshcol, because of the bunch that the children of Israel cut down there.

The expedition report

  • 25. And after forty days they returned from spying out the land.
  • 26. And they went, and came to Moses, and to Aaron, and to all the congregation of the children of Israel, in the wilderness of Paran, unto Kadesh; and they told them and the whole congregation, and showed them the fruit of the land.
  • 27. And they told him, and said, We went into the land whither thou sentest us; and it truly flows with milk and honey, and this is its fruit.
  • 28. But the people who live in this land are powerful, and the cities are fortified and very large; there we also saw the sons of Anak.
  • 29. The Amalekites live in the land of the Negeb; and the Hittites, and the Jebusites, and the Amorites dwell in the mountain; and the Canaanites dwell by the sea and by the Jordan river.
  • 30. Then Caleb silenced the people before Moses and said, We will certainly go up and possess it as an inheritance; because we will certainly prevail against it.
  • 31. But the men who went up with him said, We cannot go up against those people, because they are stronger than we.
  • 32. And they defamed the land which they had searched out, before the children of Israel, saying: The land which we went through and searched out is a land that consumes its inhabitants; and all the people that we saw in it were men of great stature.
  • 33. We also saw giants there, the sons of Anak, descendants of the giants; and we were like grasshoppers in our eyes, and so were we in their eyes.
