Fire of the Lord

  • 1. And the people began to complain to the Lord about their difficulties. When the Lord heard it, his anger was kindled; and the fire of the Lord burned among them, consuming the ends of the camp.
  • 2. The people cried out to Moses; and Moses prayed to the Lord, and the fire was quenched.
  • 3. Therefore he called that place Taberah, because the fire of the Lord was kindled among them.

God sends quails

  • 4. Now the people who were among them had a great desire, so the children of Israel also wept again, and said, Who will give us meat to eat?
  • 5. We remember the fish that we ate for free in Egypt; and cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions and garlic.
  • 6. But now our soul dries up; There is nothing but this manna before our eyes.
  • 7. The manna was like coriander seed, and its appearance was like the appearance of bdellium.
  • 8. The people spread out and gathered it; he ground it in mills or crushed it in a mortar; he cooked it in pots, and made cakes from it; and its taste was like the taste of fresh oil.
  • 9. When the dew fell on the camp at night, manna fell on it.
  • 10. Then, when Moses heard the people weeping, and their families, each one at the door of his tent, the anger of the Lord was kindled exceedingly; it also looked bad in the eyes of Moses.
  • 11. And Moses said to the Lord, Why have you done harm to your servant? And why have I not found favor in your sight, that you have laid upon me the burden of all these people?
  • 12. Have I conceived all these people? Did I give birth to him, so that you said to me: Carry him in your lap, as a nurse carries a nursing child, to the land to which you swore to his parents?
  • 13. Where would I have meat to give to all these people? Because they weep against me, saying, Give us meat to eat.
  • 14. I alone cannot carry all these people, because it is too heavy for me.
  • 15. And if you do this to me, kill me, I pray you, if I have found favor in your eyes; and don't let me see my misfortune.
  • 16. Then the Lord said to Moses: Gather me seventy men of the elders of Israel, whom you know are elders of the people and their officers; and you shall bring them before the tent of meeting, that they may be there with you.
  • 17. Then I will come down and speak with you there, and I will take away the spirit that is upon you and put it on them; and they will carry the people's burden with you, so that you cannot carry it alone.
  • 18. Say to the people: Sanctify yourselves for tomorrow, and you will eat meat; because ye wept before the Lord, saying, Who will give us meat to eat? Well, we were in Egypt. So then the Lord will give you meat, and you will eat it.
  • 19. You shall not eat one day, nor two days, nor five days, nor ten days, nor twenty days,
  • 20. but a whole month, until it comes out of your nostrils, and it is vomiting in you, because you have rejected the Lord who is among you, and wept before him, saying, Why have we come out of Egypt?
  • 21. Then Moses said, Six hundred thousand standing men are the people among whom I am; and thou sayest, Shall I give them meat to eat a whole month?
  • 22. Would enough flocks and herds be killed for them? Or would all the fish in the sea be enough for them?
  • 23. The Lord said to Moses: Will the hand of the Lord be shortened? Now you will see whether my word will be fulfilled or not.
  • 24. Then Moses went out and told the people the words of the Lord; and he gathered seventy men from the elders of the people and placed them around the tent.
  • 25. Then the Lord descended in the cloud and spoke to him; and taking away the spirit that was upon him, he placed it upon those seventy elders; and it came to pass, when the spirit rested upon them, that they prophesied, but afterward no more.
  • 26. But two men remained in the camp; one was called Eldad, and the other Medad; and the spirit rested upon them (because they were among those enrolled, although they did not go out to the tabernacle), and they prophesied in the camp.
  • 27. A young man ran and told Moses, saying, Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp.
  • 28. Joshua, son of Nun, servant of Moses, one of his chosen young men, answered and said, Moses, my lord, forbid it.
  • 29. But Moses said to him, Are you jealous for me? I wish all the Lord's people were prophets, that the Lord would give them his spirit!
  • 30. Then Moses withdrew to the camp, he and the elders of Israel.
  • 31. Then a wind came up from the Lord and brought quails from the sea and scattered them throughout the camp, almost a day's journey on one side and almost a day's journey on the other side, all around the camp; and almost two cubits, on the face of the earth.
  • 32. So the people rose up all that day and all that night and all the next day and the next night and the night after that, and they gathered the quails together; he who had the least gathered ten omers; and they spread them out around the camp.
  • 33. While the meat was between their teeth, before they chewed it, the anger of the Lord was kindled against the people, and the Lord struck the people with a very great plague.
  • 34. Therefore the name of that place was called Kibroth-Hataavá, because there they buried the people who had the desire.
  • 35. From Kibroth-hataavah the people went to Hazeroth; and he remained in Hazeroth.
