Laws for priests

  • 1. The LORD also said to Moses, “Speak to the priests, the sons of Aaron, and say to them, 'For a dead man, no priest should become unclean, except for a close relative, such as his mother, father, son, daughter or brother.
  • 2. For his virgin sister, who is close to him because she has no husband, he may become unclean.
  • 3. He must not become unclean if he is married to a woman who is widowed, divorced or has become a prostitute, for he is consecrated to his God.
  • 4. He must not profane himself for the sake of his people by becoming unclean.
  • 5. 'Priests must not shave their heads or trim the edges of their beards, nor make cuts on their bodies.
  • 6. They must be holy to their God and not profane the name of their God. They offer the offerings of the LORD, the food of their God; therefore they must be saints.
  • 11. They must not marry a prostitute or dishonored woman, nor a woman divorced from her husband, for the priest is holy to his God.
  • 12. Therefore you should consider him holy, because he offers the food of your God. He must be holy to you, for I, the LORD, who sanctifies you, am holy.
  • 9. If a priest's daughter becomes a prostitute, she dishonors her father; it must be burned in the fire.
  • 14. “'The high priest, who is superior to his brothers, on whose head the anointing oil was poured, and who was consecrated to put on the holy garments, must not dishevel his hair or tear his clothes.
  • 11. He must not approach any dead person, not even his father or mother, nor become unclean for them.
  • 12. He must not leave the sanctuary or defile the sanctuary of his God, for the crown of the anointing oil of his God is upon him. I am the LORD.
  • 13. 'He must marry a virgin woman.
  • 14. He must not marry a widow, divorced or dishonored woman, but he must marry a virgin of his own people,
  • 15. so as not to profane his descendants among his people. I am the LORD, who sanctifies it.'”
  • 16. The LORD said to Moses:
  • 17. “Say to Aaron, 'None of your descendants who has any defect will come near to present the food of their God.
  • 18. No man who has any defect may come near: not blind, not lame, not deformed or disfigured,
  • 19. nor a man who has a broken hand or foot,
  • 20. neither a hunchback, nor a dwarf, nor anyone who has a defect in their eyes, a festering sore, a skin disease, or a crushed testicle.
  • 21. No descendant of Aaron who has any defect may approach to offer the LORD's burnt offerings. He has a defect; he cannot approach to offer the food of his God.
  • 22. He can eat the food of his God, both from the sanctuary and from the courtyard.
  • 23. But because of his defect he will not approach the veil nor approach the altar, for he has a defect; he will not profane my holy places, for I am the LORD who sanctifies them.'”
  • 24. Moses spoke this to Aaron, his sons, and all the Israelites.
