Prohibition of eating blood

  • 1. The LORD also said to Moses:
  • 2. Speak to Aaron and to his sons, and to all the children of Israel, and say to them: This is the word which the LORD commanded, saying:
  • 3. Any man of the house of Israel who kills an ox, or a lamb, or a goat, in the camp, or who slaughters it outside the camp,
  • 4. and if he does not bring it to the door of the tent of meeting, to offer it as an offering to the LORD, before the tabernacle of the LORD, blood will be imputed to that man; he shed blood, wherefore such a man shall be cut off from among his people;
  • 5. that the children of Israel may bring their sacrifices, which they offer in the open field to the LORD, at the door of the tent of meeting, to the priest, and offer them as peace offerings to the LORD.
  • 6. And the priest shall sprinkle the blood upon the altar of the LORD, at the door of the tent of the congregation, and shall burn the fat as a sweet savor unto the LORD.
  • 7. And they will no longer offer their sacrifices to demons, after which they prostitute themselves; This will be a perpetual statute for them throughout their generations.
  • 8. Tell them also: Any man of the house of Israel, or of the foreigners who sojourn among them, who offers a burnt offering or sacrifice,
  • 9. and does not bring him to the door of the tent of meeting to offer him to the LORD, that man will be cut off from his people.
  • 10. And any man of the house of Israel, or of the strangers that sojourn among them, that eateth any blood, I will set my face against his soul, and will cut him off from among his people.
  • 11. For the life of the flesh is in the blood; Therefore I have given it to you on the altar to make atonement for your souls; because it is the blood that will make atonement for the soul.
  • 12. Therefore I have said to the children of Israel: None of you shall eat blood, neither shall any stranger who sojourn among you eat blood.
  • 13. And any man of the children of Israel, or of the foreigners that sojourn among them, that hunteth an animal or bird, which is eaten, shall shed its blood, and cover it with dust.
  • 14. For the life of all flesh is its blood; Therefore I have said to the children of Israel: You shall not eat the blood of any flesh; for the life of all flesh is its blood; whoever eats it will be cut off.
  • 15. And whosoever, whether native or foreign, that eateth that which dieth of himself, or that which is torn, shall wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and shall be unclean until the evening; then it will be cleaned.
  • 16. But if he does not wash them or bathe his body, he will bear his iniquity.
