The day of atonement

  • 1. And the LORD spoke to Moses, after the two sons of Aaron were dead, when they came before the LORD.
  • 2. And the LORD said unto Moses, Tell Aaron thy brother, that he not enter into the sanctuary at all times, within the veil, before the mercy seat that is upon the ark, lest he die; for I will appear in the cloud over the mercy seat.
  • 3. With this Aaron will enter the sanctuary: with a calf for a sin offering, and a ram for a burnt offering.
  • 4. He shall put on the holy linen tunic, and shall have the linen breeches upon his flesh, and shall be girded with a linen girdle, and shall cover himself with the linen miter; these are holy garments; Therefore, the meat must be washed with water before dressing.
  • 5. And from the congregation of the children of Israel he shall take two goats for a sin offering, and a ram for a burnt offering.
  • 6. And Aaron shall offer the calf of atonement, which is for himself, and make atonement for himself and for his house.
  • 7. Then he will take the two goats and present them before the LORD at the door of the tent of meeting.
  • 8. And he will cast lots for the two goats: one for the LORD; and the other, for the scapegoat.
  • 9. Then Aaron will bring the goat on which the lot for the LORD falls, and he will offer it as a sin offering.
  • 10. But the goat on which the lot to be the scapegoat falls will be presented alive before the LORD, to make atonement with it, so that it may be sent into the wilderness for the scapegoat.
  • 11. Then Aaron will bring the calf of atonement, which is for himself, and he will make atonement for himself and for his house, and he will slaughter the calf of atonement, which is for himself.
  • 12. And he shall take a censer full of coals of fire from the altar before the LORD, and his handles full of crushed incense, and bring it within the veil.
  • 13. And he shall put the incense on the fire before the LORD, so that the cloud of incense may cover the mercy seat which is over the testimony, so that it does not die.
  • 14. And he shall take some of the blood of the calf, and sprinkle the blood with his finger on the mercy seat toward the east; and before the mercy seat he shall sprinkle the blood seven times with his finger.
  • 15. Then he will kill the goat of atonement, which is for the people, and bring its blood inside the veil; and he will do with its blood as he did with the blood of the calf, and sprinkle it on the mercy seat and before the mercy seat.
  • 16. Thus he will make atonement for the sanctuary because of the uncleanness of the children of Israel and their transgressions and all their sins; and he will do so also to the tent of the congregation, which is with them in the midst of their uncleanness.
  • 17. No one will be in the tent of meeting when he enters to make atonement in the sanctuary, until he leaves; and he will make atonement for himself, and for his house, and for all the congregation of Israel.
  • 18. Then he will go out to the altar that is before the LORD, and make atonement for it; and he shall take some of the blood of the calf and of the blood of the goat, and put it on the horns of the altar all around.
  • 19. And he shall sprinkle the blood upon him with his finger seven times, and shall cleanse him, and sanctify him from the filthiness of the children of Israel.
  • 20. When he has finished making atonement for the sanctuary, and for the tent of meeting, and for the altar, he will bring the live goat.
  • 21. And Aaron shall lay both his hands upon the head of the live goat, and confess upon it all the iniquities of the children of Israel, all their transgressions, and all their sins, and lay them upon the head of the goat, and send He will take him to the desert by the hand of a man appointed for that purpose.
  • 22. And that goat will bear all their iniquities to the lonely land; and will leave the goat in the wilderness.
  • 23. Then Aaron shall enter the tent of meeting, and take off the linen garments, which he had on when he entered the sanctuary, and put them there.
  • 24. And he shall wash his flesh with water in a holy place, and put on his clothes, and go out, and make his burnt offering and the burnt offering of the people; thus, he will make atonement for himself and for the people.
  • 25. And the fat of sin will burn on the altar.
  • 26. And he that took the scapegoat shall wash his clothes, and bathe his flesh with water; then he will enter the camp.
  • 27. But the calf of atonement and the goat of atonement, whose blood was brought to make atonement in the sanctuary, shall be carried outside the camp; and their skins, their flesh, and their dung will be burned with fire.
  • 28. And he that burneth them shall wash his clothes, and bathe his flesh with water; then he will enter the camp.
  • 29. And this shall be a statute for ever for you: in the seventh month, on the tenth of the month, you shall afflict your souls, and you shall do no work, neither the native nor the foreigner who sojourns among you.
  • 30. For in that day an atonement will be made for you, to purify you: and you will be cleansed from all your sins before the LORD.
  • 31. It is a Sabbath of solemn rest for you, and you will afflict your souls; It is perpetual status.
  • 32. And the priest who is anointed and who is consecrated to administer the priesthood in the place of his father shall make atonement and put on the linen garments, the holy garments.
  • 33. And he will make atonement for the holy sanctuary, and he will make atonement for the tent of meeting and for the altar; He will also make atonement for the priests and for all the people of the congregation.
  • 34. This shall be unto you for a statute for ever, to make atonement once in the year for the children of Israel of all their sins. And Moses did as the LORD commanded him.
