Leviticus, Chapter 5 - Seeds of Faith
Leviticus, Chapter 5 – Seeds of Faith
  • 1. If anyone sins by refusing to testify when called as a witness about something he has seen or known about, he will be responsible for his iniquity.
  • 2. If anyone touches anything unclean, be it the corpse of a wild or domesticated animal, or of a reptile, even if it is an unclean thing, and then does not realize it, he will be guilty.
  • 3. If you touch something unclean that makes you unclean, whether it is the corpse of a wild or domesticated animal, or a reptile, even if it is an unclean thing, and you later realize it, you will be guilty.
  • 4. If anyone makes a hasty vow, pronouncing with his lips an oath to do good or to do evil, whatever the oath he utters hastily and realizes it, whatever good or evil the person has promised, will be guilty.
  • 5. When someone becomes guilty in any of these areas, they must confess the sin committed,
  • 6. bringing to the Lord, as a sin offering for the sin committed, a female of the flock, that is, a sheep or a goat, as a guilt sacrifice; so the priest will make atonement for that person because of the sin he committed.
  • 7. If, however, that person does not have the resources to offer a sheep, he may bring to the Lord, as a sin offering for the sin committed, two turtledoves or two young pigeons, one for the burnt offering and the other for the sin offering.
  • 8. The person will bring them to the priest, who will first offer what is for sin. The priest will break his neck, but without completely separating it from his head.
  • 9. Then he will sprinkle the blood of the sin offering on the wall of the altar; the rest of the blood will be spilled at the base of the altar. It is a sin offering.
  • 10. As for the other bird, he will do with it what he usually does with the burnt offering. So the priest will make atonement for that person because of the sin he committed, and he will be forgiven.
  • 11. If a person does not have the resources to bring two turtledoves or two young pigeons, he or she may bring a jar of fine flour as a sin offering. He shall not put oil or incense in it, for it is a sin offering.
  • 12. The person will bring it to the priest, who will take a handful of fine flour as a memorial, and burn it on the altar, on top of the offerings presented to the Lord by fire. It is a sin offering.
  • 13. Then the priest will make atonement for that person because of any sin he committed in any of these areas, and he will be forgiven. The rest will belong to the priest, as with the grain offering.”

The guilt offering

  • 14. The Lord spoke to Moses, saying:
  • 15. “When anyone commits unfaithfulness and sins unintentionally in connection with things consecrated to the Lord, he shall bring as a guilt offering to the Lord a ram without blemish from the flock, valued in terms of shekels of silver, according to the shekel of the sanctuary, as guilt offering.
  • 16. With what he sinned he will pay the additional damage and add the fifth part; He will hand over everything to the priest, who will make atonement for him with the ram offered as a guilt offering. And you will be forgiven.
  • 17. If anyone sins and does any of the things forbidden by the Lord, even without knowing it, he will be guilty and will suffer the consequences of his iniquity.
  • 18. He shall bring to the priest a ram without blemish, taken from the flock, valued in terms of shekels of silver, as a guilt offering. With the ram, the priest will make atonement for the error he committed without knowing it, and he will be forgiven.
  • 19. It is a guilt offering; the person was guilty before the Lord.”
