The death of Nadab and Abihu

  • 1. And the sons of Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, each took his censer and put fire in them, and placed incense on it, and offered strange fire before the Lord, which he commanded them.
  • 2. And fire went out from before the Lord, and consumed them; and they died before the Lord.
  • 3. Then Moses said to Aaron: This is what the Lord has spoken, saying: I will be sanctified in those who come near me, and I will be glorified before all the people. But Aaron remained silent.
  • 4. And Moses called Mishael and Elzaphan, the sons of Uzziel, Aaron's uncle, and said to them: Come near, bring your brothers out from before the sanctuary, out of the camp.
  • 5. Then they came, and led them out of the camp in their tunics, as Moses had said.
  • 6. And Moses said to Aaron, and to Eleazar and Ithamar his sons, Do not uncover your heads, nor tear your clothes, lest you die, nor wrath come upon all the congregation; but your brothers, all the house of Israel, will mourn over the fire that the Lord has kindled.
  • 7. And you shall not go out of the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, lest you die; for the anointing oil of the Lord is upon you. And they did according to the word of Moses.
  • 8. And the Lord spoke to Aaron, saying:
  • 9. You shall not drink wine or strong drink, you nor your children with you, when you enter the tent of meeting, lest you die; This will be a perpetual statute throughout your generations;
  • 10. And to make a difference between the holy and the profane, and between the unclean and the clean;
  • 11. And to teach the children of Israel all the statutes which the Lord spoke to them through Moses.
  • 12. And Moses said to Aaron, and to Eleazar and Ithamar, his remaining sons, saying, Take the food offering that remains from the offerings made by fire to the Lord, and eat it unleavened on the side of the altar; because it is a very holy thing.
  • 13. Therefore you shall eat it in a holy place; for so I was commanded.
  • 14. And the breast of the wave offering and the shoulder of the heave offering you shall eat in a clean place, you and your sons and your daughters with you; for it is given to you and to your daughters with you, as your portion and your sons' portion, of the peace offerings of the children of Israel, for a statute for ever.
  • 15. The heaved thigh and the breast of the wave offering they shall bring with the burnt offerings of the fat to offer as a wave offering before the Lord; and it shall be for you and for your children with you, for a statute for ever, as the Lord has commanded.
  • 16. Then Moses searched diligently for the goat of atonement, and behold, they had already burned it; So he was angry with Eleazar and Ithamar, the sons of Aaron, who remained with him, saying:
  • 17. Why did you not eat the sin offering in the holy place? For it is most holy, and he gave it to you to bear the iniquity of the congregation, to make atonement for them before the Lord.
  • 18. Behold, his blood was not brought into the sanctuary; certainly you should have eaten the offering in the sanctuary, as I commanded.
  • 19. And Aaron said to Moses, Behold, today they have offered their sin offering and their burnt offering before the Lord; and such things happened to me; If I had eaten the sin offering today, would that have been pleasing in the eyes of the Lord?
  • 20. When Moses heard this, it seemed good to him.
