The birth of Samson

  • 1. The Israelites once again did evil in the sight of the Lord, and so the Lord delivered them into the hands of the Philistines for forty years.
  • 2. In Zorah there was a man named Manoah, from the clan of the tribe of Dan, who had a barren wife.
  • 3. One day, the Messenger of the Lord appeared to her and said: “Although you are barren and have no children, you will become pregnant and give birth to a son.
  • 4. However, be careful not to drink wine or any other fermented drink, and do not eat anything unclean;
  • 5. and do not let the razor touch your son's head, for he will be dedicated to God from birth as a Nazarite. He will begin to deliver Israel from the hands of the Philistines.”
  • 6. Then the woman went and told her husband everything: “A man of God came to talk to me. He was like a divine messenger, with an impressive appearance. I didn't ask where he came from, and he didn't tell me his name,
  • 7. but he assured me, 'You will become pregnant and give birth to a son. However, do not drink wine or any other fermented drink, and do not eat anything unclean, because the child will be dedicated to God from birth until the day of his death.'
  • 8. Then Manoah prayed to the Lord: “O Lord, I pray that the man of God whom you sent will return to instruct us on how we should care for the child who will be born.”
  • 9. God heard Manoah's prayer, and God's Messenger appeared again to the woman while she was in the field. Her husband, Manoá, was not with her.
  • 10. But she ran to tell her husband: “The man who appeared to me the other day is here!”
  • 11. Manoah got up and followed his wife. When he got close to the man, he asked: “Are you the one who spoke to my wife?” “Yes,” he replied.
  • 12. Manoah asked, “When will your words be fulfilled, how should we raise the child? What should he do?”
  • 13. The Messenger of the Lord replied: “Your wife must follow all the instructions I have given her.
  • 14. She must not eat anything derived from the vine, nor drink wine or any fermented drink, nor eat anything unclean. She must obey all the instructions I have given her.”
  • 15. Manoah said to the Messenger of the Lord: “We would like you to stay with us; We would like to offer you a goat as a gift.”
  • 16. But the Messenger of the Lord replied: “If I stay, I will not eat anything. However, if you prepare a burnt offering, offer it to the Lord.” Manoah did not know that he was the Messenger of the Lord.
  • 17. Then Manoah asked, “What is your name, so that we may honor you when your word comes true?”
  • 18. The Messenger of the Lord replied: “Why do you ask my name? It is something beyond human understanding.”
  • 19. Then Manoah took a kid and a grain offering and offered them to the Lord on a rock. As Manoah and his wife watched, the Lord did something wonderful:
  • 20. when the flame of the altar ascended to the heavens, the Messenger of the Lord ascended into the flame. When Manoah and his wife saw this, they fell on their faces.
  • 21. When the Messenger of the Lord did not manifest himself again to Manoah and his wife, Manoah realized that he was the Messenger of the Lord.
  • 22. “We will surely die!” he said to his wife, “for we have seen God!”
  • 23. But the wife answered, “If the Lord had intended to kill us, He would not have accepted the burnt offering and the grain offering from our hands, nor shown us all these things, nor revealed to us what we have now been told.”
  • 24. The woman gave birth to a boy and named him Samson. He grew, and the Lord blessed him.
  • 25. And the Spirit of the Lord began to act in him when he was in Mahane-dan, between Zorah and Eshtaol.
