Joshua Verses, Chapter 14 of the Book of Joshua of the Bible.

Joshua - Old Testament
Joshua – Old Testament

The division of the land west of the Jordan

  • 1. These were the lands that the Israelites received as an inheritance in Canaan, and were divided among them by Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and the leaders of the clans of the tribes of Israel.
  • 2. The distribution of the inheritance was done by lot among the nine and a half tribes, as the Lord had ordered through Moses.
  • 3. For Moses had already given an inheritance to the two and a half tribes east of the Jordan, but the Levites were not given any portion of land among the others.
  • 4. Joseph's sons formed the tribes of Manasseh and Ephraim. The Levites were not given any land, just cities to live in and pastures for their livestock.
  • 5. The Israelites divided the land according to the Lord's orders given to Moses.

Hebron is given to Caleb

  • 6. The men of Judah came to Joshua in Gilgal, and Caleb, the son of the Kenizzite Jephunneh, said to Joshua, “Do you remember what the Lord said to Moses the man of God in Kadesh-Barnea concerning me? and from you.
  • 7. I was forty years old when Moses, the servant of the Lord, sent me from Kadesh Barnea to spy out the land. I brought a sincere report,
  • 8. But my fellow Israelites who went with me made the people lose courage. However, I remained faithful to the Lord, my God.
  • 9. On that day Moses swore an oath to me, saying, 'Surely the land on which you have set foot will be your inheritance and that of your descendants forever, for you have been faithful to the Lord my God.'
  • 10. “Now you see, the Lord has kept me alive, just as he promised. It has been forty-five years since he made this promise to Moses when Israel was in the wilderness. And now I'm eighty-five years old!
  • 11. I still have the same strength I had that day when Moses sent me to spy out the land. I have the stamina for war, just as I did then.
  • 12. Now give me this mountainous region that the Lord promised at that time. At that time, you heard that the Anakites lived there, in large, fortified cities. But with the help of the Lord, I will drive them out, as he promised.”
  • 13. Then Joshua blessed Caleb son of Jephunneh and gave him Hebron as an inheritance.
  • 14. Therefore, to this day, Hebron belongs to the descendants of Caleb, the son of the Kenizzite Jephunneh, because he was faithful to the Lord, the God of Israel.
  • 15. In ancient times, Hebron was called Kiriath-Arba, in honor of Arba, the greatest of the Anakites. And the land rested from war.
