Joshua - Old Testament
Joshua – Old Testament
  • 1. These were the lands that were distributed to the tribe of Manasseh, the eldest son of Joseph. Machir, the eldest son of Manasseh and father of Gilead, was given the region of Gilead and Bashan.
  • 2. In addition, lands were given to the clans of the other sons of Manasseh: Abiezer, Helech, Asriel, Shechem, Hepher and Shemida. These are the sons of Manasseh son of Joseph, according to their clans.
  • 3. However, Zelophehad, son of Hepher, grandson of Gilead, great-grandson of Machir and great-great-grandson of Manasseh, had no sons, only daughters. The names of his daughters were Mahalah, Noah, Hogla, Milcah and Tirzah.
  • 4. They went to Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and the leaders, and said, “The Lord commanded Moses to give us an inheritance among our relatives.” Then Joshua gave them an inheritance among their father's relatives, according to the commandment of the Lord.
  • 5. The tribe of Manasseh received ten portions of land, in addition to Gilead and Bashan, which are east of the Jordan.
  • 6. For both the daughters of Manasseh and his sons received an inheritance. The land of Gilead went to the other descendants of Manasseh.
  • 7. The territory of Manasseh extended from Asher to Michmetah, east of Shechem. The border went from there to the south, reaching the people who lived in En-Tapua.
  • 8. The land of Tapua belonged to Manasseh, but the city of Tapua, on the border of Manasseh, belonged to the Ephraimites.
  • 9. Then the border went down to the Brook of Cana. South of the brook were cities belonging to Ephraim, which were in the middle of the cities of Manasseh, but the border of Manasseh was north of the brook and ended at the sea.
  • 10. In the south, the land belonged to Ephraim, and in the north, to Manasseh. Manasseh's territory reached the sea and reached Asher to the north and Issachar to the east.
  • 11. In Issachar and Asher, Manasseh also had the cities of Bethshean, Ibleam, Dor, Endor, Taanach and Megiddo, together with their respective villages. The third city on the list, Dor, is known as Naphoth.
  • 12. However, the Manassites were unable to expel the inhabitants of these cities, as the Canaanites were determined to live in that region.
  • 13. However, when the Israelites became stronger, they subjected the Canaanites to forced labor, but did not completely expel them.
  • 14. Joseph's descendants then said to Joshua, “Why were we given only a portion, only a portion of inheritance? We are a numerous people, and the Lord has blessed us abundantly.”
  • 15. Joshua replied, “If you are so numerous and the mountains of Ephraim are not enough for you, go up into the forest and clear the land for yourselves in the land of the Perizzites and Rephaim.”
  • 16. Joseph's descendants said, “The mountains are not enough for us; moreover, all the Canaanites who live in the plain have iron chariots, both those who live in Bethshean and its villages and those who live in the valley of Jezreel.”
  • 17. Then Joshua said to the tribe of Joseph, to Ephraim and to Manasseh, “You are numerous and powerful. You won't just have a portion.
  • 18. The forested mountains will be yours. Cleanse the land and it will be yours, to its furthest borders. Even though the Canaanites have iron chariots and are strong, you will be able to drive them out.”
