• 1. Then Job replied:
• 2. “I know this is true. But how can a mortal be righteous before God?
• 3. Even if I wanted to argue with Him, I couldn't respond even once in a thousand.
• 4. His wisdom is profound, His power is immense. Who can resist Him and emerge unscathed?
• 5. He moves mountains without them knowing, and in His anger He makes them tremble.
• 6. He shakes the earth and moves it out of place, making its pillars tremble.
• 7. He commands the sun, and it does not shine; It seals out the starlight.
• 8. He alone stretches the heavens and walks on the waves of the sea.
• 9. He created Ursa and Orion, the Pleiades and the southern constellations.
• 10. He performs wonders that are unfathomable, miracles that are countless.
• 11. When He passes by me, I cannot see Him; when He goes on, I don't notice Him.
• 12. If He grabs something, who can stop Him? Who can say to Him, 'What are You doing?'
• 13. God does not contain His wrath; even Rahab's allies cower at His feet.
• 14. “How then could I reason with Him? How could I find words to contest Him?
• 15. Even if I am innocent, I could not answer Him; I would just beg my Judge for mercy.
• 16. Even if He called me and I answered, I don't believe He would listen to me.
• 17. He would crush me with a storm and for no reason multiply my wounds.
• 18. He would not allow me to breathe, but would plunge me into afflictions.
• 19. Should I resort to force? He is more powerful! Or should I seek justice? Who would summon me to court?
• 20. Even though I was innocent, my own mouth would condemn me; Even if I had integrity, she would declare me guilty.
• 21. “Though I am upright, I care not for myself; I despise my own life.
• 22. Everything is the same; therefore I say: He destroys both the upright and the wicked.
• 23. When a scourge causes sudden death, He mocks the despair of the innocent.
• 24. When a country falls into the hands of the wicked, He blocks the eyes of the judges. If it's not Him, then who is it?
• 25. “My days go by faster than a runner; they fly without bringing joy.
• 26. They pass by like boats of reeds, like eagles diving in search of prey.
• 27. If I say: 'I will forget my complaint, I will change my countenance and smile',
• 28. yet I am terrified by all my afflictions, for I know that you will not hold me innocent.
• 29. Since I have already been found guilty, why fight in vain?
• 30. Even if I washed myself with soap and purified my hands with soda,
• 31. yet You would plunge me into the mire, and my own clothes would despise me.
• 32. He is not a man like me, so that I can answer Him and appear before the court together.
• 33. There is no referee between us who can lay a hand on both of us,
• 34. may he remove the rod of God from me, so that His terror will not frighten me!
• 35. Then I would speak without fear, but that is not the situation.”
