The sign of Emmanuel

  • 1. In the reign of Ahaz, son of Jotham and grandson of Uzziah, king of Judah, Rezin, king of Syria, and Pekah, son of Remaliah, king of Israel, advanced against Jerusalem, but were unable to conquer it.
  • 2. When King Ahaz received this news, his heart and the hearts of his people were filled with fear, like trees in the forest shaken by the wind.
  • 3. Then the Lord said to Isaiah: “Go and meet Ahaz, you and your son Shear-jashub, at the end of the aqueduct of the Superior reservoir, on the road that goes to the Lavandeiro field.
  • 4. And tell him: Be careful, stay calm and don't be afraid. Do not let your heart fail before these two pieces of smoking brands, Rezin Syria and the son of Remaliah.
  • 5. For Syria and Ephraim and the son of Remaliah are plotting against you, saying:
  • 6. 'We will invade Judah, cause panic and divide the kingdom between us. We will make Tabeel's son king over him.'”
  • 7. But the Sovereign Lord says: “It will not happen, it will not be fulfilled,
  • 8. for the head of Syria is Damascus, and the head of Damascus is Rezin. Within sixty-five years, Ephraim will be torn apart, ceasing to be a people.
  • 9. The head of Ephraim is Samaria, and the head of Samaria is the son of Remaliah. If you do not remain firm in your faith, you will certainly not survive.”
  • 10. Once again, the Lord spoke to Ahaz:
  • 11. “Ask the Lord your God for a sign; it may be from the lowest depths or from the highest heights.”
  • 12. But Ahaz answered, “I will not ask, I will not put the Lord to the test.”
  • 13. Then Isaiah said, “Listen, you descendants of David! Isn't it enough to tire men's patience? Will they also tire the patience of my God?
  • 14. Therefore the Lord himself will give them a sign: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.
  • 15. He will feed on curds and honey until he knows how to reject evil and choose good.
  • 16. But before the boy knows how to reject evil and choose good, the land of the two kings you fear will be abandoned.
  • 17. The Lord will bring upon you, upon your people, and upon the descendants of your father, days such as have not been since Ephraim separated from Judah.”
  • 18 On that day the Lord will whistle to call the flies that are in the canals of Egypt and the bees that are in Assyria.
  • 19. They will come and settle in the deep valleys and in the clefts of the rocks, in every thorn bush and in every spring.
  • 20. On that day the Lord will use a razor hired beyond Euphrates, the king of Assyria, to shave and cut the hair and hair on the legs of Judah. He will also strip the people of Judah of their resources.
  • 21. On that day a man will raise only one cow and two sheep,
  • 22. and because of the abundance of milk they will produce, there will be curds to eat. All who are left on earth will eat curds and honey.
  • 23. On that day, where there were a thousand vines worth a thousand pieces of silver, there will be only thorns and rose hips.
  • 24. Men will enter there with bows and arrows, for the whole land will be covered with thorns and wild roses.
  • 25. As for all the hills that used to be plowed with a hoe, you will be afraid to approach them; they will be places for cattle to roam and sheep to graze.
