  • 1. However, there will be no more darkness for those who were afflicted. In the past he humbled the land of Zebulun and Naphtali, but in the future he will honor Galilee of the Gentiles, the way to the sea by the Jordan.
  • 2. The people who walked in darkness saw a great light; upon those who lived in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned.
  • 3. You made the nation grow and increased its joy; they rejoice before you as those who rejoice in the harvest, as those who rejoice when they divide the goods taken in battle.
  • 4. For you destroyed the yoke that oppressed them, the yoke that was on their shoulders and the punishment rod of their oppressor, as on the day of Midian's defeat.
  • 5. For every warrior's boot used in battle and every garment covered in blood will be burned, like wood on a fire.
  • 6. For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given, and the government is upon his shoulder. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.
  • 7. He will extend his dominion, and there will be endless peace on the throne of David and on his kingdom, established and maintained with justice and righteousness from now on and forever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.
  • 8. The Lord sent a message against Jacob, and it struck Israel.
  • 9. All the people will know, both Ephraim and the inhabitants of Samaria, who say with pride and arrogance of heart:
  • 10. “The bricks have fallen, but we will rebuild with hewn stones; the sycamore trees have been cut down, but we will replace them with cedars.”
  • 11. But the Lord strengthened Rezin's adversaries to attack them, and stirred up their enemies against them.
  • 12. The Arameans of the east and the Philistines of the west devoured Israel, opening their mouths wide open. Despite all this, divine wrath did not turn aside; his hand remains raised.
  • 13. But the people did not return to him who struck them, nor did they seek the Lord of hosts.
  • 14. For this reason the Lord cuts off from Israel both the head and the tail, both the palm and the reed, in a single day;
  • 15. the authorities and prominent men are the head, the prophets who teach lies are the tail.
  • 16. Those who guide this people mislead them, and those who are guided allow themselves to be led astray.
  • 17. Therefore the Lord will not have joy in the young, nor will he have mercy on orphans and widows, for they are all hypocrites and perverse, and they all speak foolish things. Despite all this, his anger did not turn away; his hand remains raised.
  • 18. For wickedness burns like fire; It consumes wild rose bushes and hawthorns, sets the forest thickets on fire, creating clouds of smoke.
  • 19. By the wrath of the Lord of hosts the land will be parched, and the people will be like wood on the fire; no one will spare your brother.
  • 20. On the right they will devour, but they will still be hungry; on the left they will eat, but they will not be satisfied. Each one will eat his own brother's flesh.
  • 21. Manasseh against Ephraim, Ephraim against Manasseh, and together they will turn against Judah. Despite all this, divine wrath did not turn away; his hand remains raised.
