The branch of Jesse

  • 1. A branch will emerge from the trunk of Jesse, and a shoot will sprout from his roots.
  • 2. The Spirit of the Lord will rest upon him, the Spirit that gives wisdom and understanding, the Spirit that brings counsel and power, the Spirit that gives knowledge and the fear of the Lord.
  • 3. And he will be inspired by the fear of the Lord. He will not judge by appearance, nor will he decide based on what he has heard;
  • 4. but with righteousness he will judge those in need, with justice he will make decisions in favor of the poor. With his words, as if they were a staff, he will strike the earth; with the breath of his mouth he will kill the wicked.
  • 5. Righteousness will be his sash, and faithfulness his belt.
  • 6. The wolf will live with the lamb, the leopard will lie down with the goat, the calf, the lion and the fattened calf will feed together; and a child will guide them.
  • 7. The cow will feed with the bear, her cubs will lie down together, and the lion will eat straw like the ox.
  • 8. The little child will play near the snake's hiding place, the child will put his hand in the viper's nest.
  • 9. No one will do any harm or destroy anything in all my holy mountain, for the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea.
  • 10. On that day, the nations will seek the Root of Jesse, who will be like a banner for the people, and his resting place will be glorious.
  • 11. On that day the Lord will stretch out his arm a second time to claim the remnant of his people who are left in Assyria, in Egypt, in Pathros, in Ethiopia, in Elam, in Shinar, in Hamath and in the islands of the sea.
  • 12. He will raise a banner for the nations to gather together the exiles of Israel; He will gather together the scattered people of Judah from the four corners of the earth.
  • 13. Ephraim's jealousy will disappear, and Judah's hostility will be eliminated; Ephraim will not be jealous of Judah, nor will Judah be hostile to Ephraim.
  • 14. They will infiltrate the western slopes of Philistia; together they will plunder the people of the east. They will lay their hands on Edom and Moab, and the Ammonites will be subject to them.
  • 15. The Lord will dry up the gulf of the sea of Egypt; With a strong wind he will sweep the Euphrates with his hand and divide it into seven streams, so that people can cross it with sandals.
  • 16. There will be a road for the remnant of his people who are left in Assyria, as there was for Israel when they left Egypt.
