Cain and Abel

  • 1. Now the man knew Eve his wife; She conceived, and when she gave birth to Cain, she said: I have acquired a man with the help of the Lord.
  • 2. Then she gave birth to Abel, her brother. Abel became a shepherd, and Cain a tiller of the land.
  • 3. After some time, Cain brought to the Lord an offering of the fruit of the ground;
  • 4. Abel also brought some of the firstfruits of his flock and its fat. The Lord looked upon Abel and his offering,
  • 5. But he paid no attention to Cain and his offering. Cain was exceedingly angry, and his countenance fell.
  • 6. Then the Lord asked Cain: Why were you angry? And why is your countenance drooping?
  • 7. If you do well, isn't it certain that you will be accepted? If, however, you do wrong, behold, sin lies at the door; his desire will be against you, but it is up to you to dominate him.
  • 8. Cain said to his brother Abel: Let us go into the field. While they were in the field, it came to pass that Cain rose up against his brother Abel and killed him.
  • 9. The Lord asked Cain: Where is Abel your brother? He replied: I don't know; Am I my brother's keeper?
  • 10. Then God said to him: What have you done? The voice of your brother's blood cries out to me from the earth.
  • 11. And now you are cursed from the ground, which opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood from your hand.
  • 12. When you till the land, it will no longer give you its strength; You will be a fugitive and a wanderer on earth.
  • 13. Cain said to the Lord: My punishment is greater than I can bear.
  • 14. Behold, today you have driven me from the face of the earth; I will also be hidden from your presence; I will be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth; whoever finds me will kill me.
  • 15. But the Lord said to him: Therefore whoever kills Cain will be avenged seven times. And the Lord put a mark on Cain, so that whoever found him would not harm him.
  • 16. So Cain went out from the presence of the Lord, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden.
  • 17. Cain knew his wife, and she conceived and gave birth to Enoch. Cain built a city and called it Enoch, after his son.
  • 18. Irad was born to Enoch, Irad begot Meujael, Meujael begot Metusael, Metusael begot Lamech.
  • 19. Lamech took two women for himself; the name of one was Ada, and the name of the other Zillah.
  • 20. Adah gave birth to Jabal, who was the father of those who live in tents and keep cattle.
  • 21. His brother's name was Jubal; this was the father of all who play the harp and flute.
  • 22. And Zillah also gave birth to Tubal-Cain, the maker of every cutting instrument, of bronze and of iron. Tubal-Cain's sister was Naamah.
  • 23. Lamech said to his wives, Adah and Zillah, listen to me; you women of Lamech, listen to what I say to you: I killed a man because he injured me, and a young man because he trampled on me.
  • 24. If Cain is to be avenged seven times, Lamech will be avenged seventy-seven times.
  • 25. Adam met his wife again; and she gave birth to a son, and she named him Seth; because, she said, God has given me another descendant in place of Abel; because Cain killed him.
  • 26. A son was also born to Seth; and he called him Enos. It was at this time that men began to call on the name of the Lord.
