Joseph and Potiphar's wife

  • 1. Now Joseph was taken into Egypt; and Potiphar, Pharaoh's officer, captain of the guard, an Egyptian, bought him from the Ishmaelites who had taken him there.
  • 2. But the Lord was with Joseph, and he became prosperous. He remained in the house of his Egyptian master.
  • 3. When Potiphar saw that the Lord was with him and that everything he did the Lord prospered in his hands,
  • 4. Potiphar took pleasure in Joseph and made him manager of his house and in charge of everything he owned.
  • 5. From the moment he made him manager of his house and everything he owned, the Lord blessed the Egyptian's house because of Joseph. The Lord's blessing was on everything that Potiphar owned, both at home and in the field.
  • 6. Potiphar left everything he owned in Joseph's care and didn't worry about anything except the food he ate. José was handsome in appearance and had a good presence.
  • 7. After a while, his master's wife began to desire Joseph and invited him: “Come, lie with me!”
  • 8. But he refused and said to him: “My master does not care about anything in his house and has entrusted me with everything he has.
  • 9. He is not greater than I in this house, and he has not denied me anything except you, because she is his wife. How could I, then, commit something so ungodly and sin against God?”
  • 10. And she insisted on Joseph day after day, but he would not listen to her and would not lie with her or stay near her.
  • 11. One day, Joseph entered the house to do his work, and there were only him and his master's wife.
  • 12. She took him by the cloak and said to him, “Come, lie down with me!” But he ran away, leaving the cloak in her hands, and ran outside.
  • 13. When he saw that he had left the cloak in his hands and had fled,
  • 14. She called her servants and said to them, “Look! The Hebrew slave my husband brought us came here to insult me!
  • 15. But when I shouted for help, he left his cloak next to me and ran away.”
  • 16. She kept the cloak with her until her husband arrived home.
  • 17. And he told him the same story: “The Hebrew slave you brought to us came here to insult me!
  • 18. When I screamed for help, he left his cloak next to me and ran away.”
  • 19. When his master heard the story that his wife told him, saying, “This is how your slave treated me,” he became angry.
  • 20. Joseph was thrown into prison, where the king's prisoners were held, and there he remained.
  • 21. But the Lord was with Joseph and showed him kindness, granting him favor in the eyes of the jailer.
  • 22. The jailer entrusted all the prisoners in the prison to Joseph's care, and he took charge of everything that was done there.
  • 23. The jailer did not worry about anything that was under Joseph's responsibility, because the Lord was with Joseph and what he did the Lord prospered.
