Dina and Shechem

  • 1. Dinah, the daughter Leah had given to Jacob, went out to see the women of that land.
  • 2. When he saw Shechem, the son of Hamor the Hivite, prince of that region, he took her with him and raped her.
  • 3. His soul clung to Dinah, Jacob's daughter, and he loved her and spoke tenderly to her.
  • 4. Shechem said to his father Hamor, “Get me that young woman as a wife.”
  • 5. Jacob heard that Shechem had raped Dinah, his daughter. But as his sons were with the cattle in the field, he preferred to wait until they arrived.
  • 6. Meanwhile, Hamor, Shechem's father, went to talk to Jacob.
  • 7. When the sons of Jacob returned from the field and heard what had happened, they were indignant and angry, because Shechem had committed a disgusting offense against Israel by sleeping with Jacob's daughter. This should not be done.
  • 8. But Hamor said to them, “My son Shechem is in love with your daughter. Please allow him to marry her.
  • 9. Make marriages with us; give your daughters in marriage to us and take ours for yourselves.
  • 10. You will be able to live with us; the land is at your disposal. Settle wherever you want and trade there; possess it.”
  • 11. Then Shechem said to Dinah's father and brothers, “Get me their favor, and I will give you whatever you ask.
  • 12. Demand from me a gift and a gift, and I will give whatever you ask of me. Just give me the young woman as a wife.”
  • 13. But the sons of Jacob answered Shechem and Hamor their father with craftiness, because he had dishonored Dinah their sister.
  • 14. They said to them, “We cannot do this; We cannot give our sister to an uncircumcised man. It would be a dishonor for us.
  • 15. We will only agree to your marriage on this condition: that all of your males be circumcised.
  • 16. Only then will we give you our daughters in marriage and marry your daughters. We will live with you and become one people.
  • 17. But if you do not listen to us and circumcise yourselves, we will take our daughter away and leave.”
  • 18. The proposal pleased Hamor and Shechem, Hamor's son.
  • 19. The young man, who did not hesitate to do what was asked of him, wasted no time, as he liked Jacob's daughter. He was the most respected in all of his father's house.
  • 20. Hamor and his son Shechem went to the city gate and spoke to their fellow citizens:
  • 21. “These men are peaceful toward us,” they said. “Let them live in the land and trade in it; the land is spacious enough for them. We can marry their daughters and give them ours.
  • 22. However, they must attend to us. We will only consent to live with them and become one people when all our men are circumcised, just like them.
  • 23. Are not their flocks and herds and their possessions all ours? Accept their proposal to live with us.”
  • 24. Everyone who went out of the city gate heard the proposal of Hamor and his son Shechem, and all the men were circumcised.
  • 25. Three days later, while they were still in pain, two of Jacob's sons, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brothers, each took his sword and attacked the unprepared city, killing all the men.
  • 26. They also killed Hamor and his son Shechem with the sword, took Dinah from Shechem's house, and left.
  • 27. The other sons of Jacob came to the dead and plundered the city, because their sister had been dishonored.
  • 28. They took the sheep, the oxen and the donkeys, what was in the city and in the country,
  • 29. and all their possessions, and took their little ones and their wives as prisoners, plundering everything that was in the houses.
  • 30. Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, “You have put me in trouble by making me disgusting to the Canaanites and the Perizzites, the people of this region. We are few in number, and if they unite against me and attack me, I and my family will be destroyed.”
  • 31. But they answered, “Should we treat our sister as a prostitute?”
