Jacob meets Esau

  • 1. Jacob looked and saw Esau approaching with four hundred men. Then he divided the children between Leah, Rachel and the two servants.
  • 2. He put the servants and their children first, Leah and her children second, and Rachel and Joseph last.
  • 3. He himself passed before them and prostrated himself on the ground seven times, until he approached his brother.
  • 4. Esau ran to meet him, hugged him, threw himself on his neck and kissed him. And they cried.
  • 5. Esau looked around and saw the women and children and asked, “Who are these with you? Jacob replied, “They are the children that God has graciously given to your servant.”
  • 6. The servants and their children approached and prostrated themselves.
  • 7. Leah and her sons also approached and prostrated themselves. After that, José and Raquel approached and prostrated themselves.
  • 8. Esau asked, “What is the point of all these flocks and herds that I have found? Jacob replied, “I have found favor in the eyes of my lord.”
  • 9. But Esau said, “I have enough, my brother; keep what is yours for yourself.”
  • 10. Jacob, however, insisted: “No, please! If I have now found favor in your eyes, accept my gift. For seeing your face is like seeing the face of God, now that you have received me so friendly.
  • 11. Therefore, accept the gift that has been brought to you, because God has been kind to me and I have enough.” Jacob insisted on Esau, until Esau accepted him.
  • 12. Then Esau said, “Let us go our separate ways. I will go before you.”
  • 13. But Jacob said to him, “My lord knows that children are weak and that I have to look after the sheep and cows that are suckling. If you overload them for just one day, the entire herd will die.
  • 14. Please, my lord, go before your servant. I will follow slowly, according to the rhythm of the cattle and the children, until I reach my lord in Seir.”
  • 15. Esau replied, “Leave some of my men with me. " "For what? “, asked Jacob. Esau insisted: “Let it be so! Let me at least leave some of my men with you.” But Jacob replied, “How good it is to know that my master is pleased with me! “.
  • 16. So that same day Esau returned by the way he had come to Seir.
  • 17. But Jacob went to Succoth, where he built a house for himself and shelters for his flock. That's why he named the place Succoth.
  • 18. After leaving Paddan-aram, Jacob arrived at Salem, the city of Shechem, in Canaan, and camped near the city.
  • 19. He bought from Hamor, the father of Shechem, the part of the land where he had pitched his tent, for a hundred pieces of money.
  • 20. There he built an altar and called it El-Elohe-Israel.
