The fall of man

  • 1. Now the serpent was the most cunning of all the beasts of the field that the Lord God had made. And she said unto the woman, Is it so that God hath said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?
  • 2. The woman answered the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden,
  • 3. but of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, God said: You shall not eat of it, nor touch it, lest you die.
  • 4. The serpent said to the woman: You will certainly not die.
  • 5. For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.
  • 6. When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, pleasing to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took some of its fruit and ate; and she also gave it to her husband, and he ate.
  • 7. Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; So they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves aprons.
  • 8. And they heard the voice of the Lord God, walking in the garden in the cool of the day; and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden.
  • 9. But the Lord God called the man and asked him: Where are you?
  • 10. He answered: I heard your voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid.
  • 11. God asked him: Who showed you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree from which I commanded you not to eat?
  • 12. The man answered: The woman whom you gave me to be with me, she gave me from the tree, and I ate.
  • 13. Then the Lord God asked the woman: What is this that you have done? The woman answered: The serpent deceived me, and I ate.
  • 14. Then the Lord God said to the serpent: Because you have done this, you will be cursed above all the livestock and among all the beasts of the field; upon your belly you will walk, and dust you will eat all the days of your life.
  • 15. I will put enmity between you and the woman, between your offspring and her offspring. He will bruise your head, and you will bruise his heel.
  • 16. And he said unto the woman, I will greatly multiply the pain of thy conception; in pain you will give birth to children; and your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.
  • 17. And he said unto Adam, Because thou hast heeded the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree of which I commanded thee not to eat, cursed is the ground because of thee; in fatigue you will obtain sustenance from it during the days of your life.
  • 18. It will produce thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat the herbs of the field.
  • 19. By the sweat of your face you will eat bread, until you return to the ground, for from it you were taken; for you are dust and to dust you will return.
  • 20. And Adam called his wife's name Eve, because she was the mother of all living.
  • 21. The Lord God made fur coats for Adam and his wife, and clothed them.
  • 22. Then the Lord God said: Behold, the man has become like one of us, knowing good and evil. Now therefore, lest he stretch out his hand and take from the tree of life and eat and live forever,
  • 23. the Lord God cast him out of the garden of Eden, to work the land from which he was taken.
  • 24. And when he had cast out the man, he placed cherubim on the east of the garden of Eden, and a flaming sword that turned on every side, to guard the way to the tree of life.
