Abraham's death

  • 1. And Abraham took another wife; and his name was Keturah.
  • 2. And she bore him Zimram, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Jishbak and Shuah.
  • 3. And Jocsan begat Sheba and Dedan; and the sons of Dedan were: Assurim, Lethushim and Leumim.
  • 4. And the sons of Midian were: Ephah, Epher, Enoch, Abida and Elda. These were all sons of Keturah.
  • 5. And Abraham gave all that he had to Isaac.
  • 6. But to the sons of Abraham's concubines Abraham gave gifts; and, while he was still alive, he sent them to the eastern side, to the eastern land.
  • 7. And these are the days of the years of the life of Abraham, who lived one hundred and seventy-five years.
  • 8. And Abraham expired, dying at a good old age, old and full of days; and was gathered to his people.
  • 9. And his sons, Isaac and Ishmael, buried him in the cave of Machpelah, in the field of Ephron, the son of Zoar, a Hittite, which is opposite Mamre,
  • 10. The field that Abraham bought from the children of Heth. Abraham and Sarah, his wife, were buried there.
  • 11. And it came to pass after the death of Abraham, that God blessed Isaac his son; and Isaac dwelt by the well of Labe-Roi.

Ishmael's children

  • 12. And these are the generations of Ishmael the son of Abraham, whom Sarah's handmaid, an Egyptian, gave to Abraham.
  • 13. And these are the names of the sons of Ishmael, by their names, according to their generations: the firstborn of Ishmael was Nebaioth, then Kedar, Adbeel, Mibsam,
  • 14. Misma, Duma, Massá,
  • 15. Hadad, Tema, Jetur, Naphis and Kedemah.
  • 16. These are the sons of Ishmael, and these are their names for their towns and for their castles; twelve princes according to their tribes.
  • 17. And these are the years of Ishmael's life, one hundred and thirty-seven years; and he expired and died, and was gathered to his people.
  • 18. And they dwelt from Havilah to Shur, which is opposite Egypt, as far as Assyria; and bordered all his brothers.

Jacob and Esau

  • 19. And these are the generations of Isaac the son of Abraham: Abraham begat Isaac.
  • 20. And Isaac was forty years old when he took to his wife Rebekah, the daughter of Bethuel the Syrian of Paddan-aram, the sister of Laban the Syrian.
  • 21. And Isaac prayed urgently to the LORD for his wife, because she was barren; and the LORD heard his prayers, and Rebekah his wife conceived.
  • 22. And the children fought within her; Then he said: If it is so, why am I like this? And he went to ask the LORD.
  • 23. And the LORD said unto her, Two nations are in thy womb, and two peoples shall be divided from thy womb, and one people shall be stronger than another people, and the greater shall serve the lesser.
  • 24. And when her days for giving birth were fulfilled, behold, twins were in her womb.
  • 25. And the first came out red-haired, and all like a garment of hair; therefore they called his name Esau.
  • 26. And afterward his brother came out, his hand clinging to Esau's heel; therefore his name was called Jacob; and Isaac was sixty years old when he begat them.
  • 27. And the boys grew, and Esau became a man expert in hunting, a man of the field; but Jacob was a simple man, living in tents.
  • 28. And Isaac loved Esau, because hunting was his pleasure, but Rebekah loved Jacob.
  • 29. And Jacob cooked stew; and Esau came from the field, and he was tired.
  • 30. And Esau said unto Jacob, Let me, I pray thee, eat of this red stew, for I am weary. That's why it was called Edom.
  • 31. Then Jacob said, Sell me your birthright today.
  • 32. And Esau said, Behold, I am at the point of death; What good will my birthright be to me?
  • 33. Then Jacob said, Swear to me today. And he swore to him and sold his birthright to Jacob.
  • 34. And Jacob gave Esau bread and lentil stew; and he ate, and drank, and arose, and went out; so Esau despised his birthright.
