Isaac and Rebekah

  • 1. And Abraham was old, and advanced in years; and the LORD had blessed Abraham in everything.
  • 2. And Abraham said to his servant, the eldest of the house, who had the rule over all that he owned, Now put your hand under my thigh,
  • 3. And thou shalt swear by the LORD God of heaven and God of earth, that thou shalt not take for my son a wife of the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell;
  • 4. But you will go to my country and to my kindred, and you will take a wife for my son, for Isaac.
  • 5. The servant said to her, If the woman does not wish to come with me to this land, shall I then make your son return to the land from which you came?
  • 6. And Abraham said unto him, Beware lest thou bring my son back there.
  • 7. The LORD God of heaven, who took me from my father's house and from the land of my kindred, and who spoke to me, and who swore, saying: To your descendants I will give this land; He will send his angel before you, so that you may take a wife from there for my son.
  • 8. If the woman does not want to come after you, you will be free from this oath of mine; Just don't make my son return there.
  • 9. Then the servant put his hand under the thigh of Abraham his master, and swore to him about this matter.
  • 10. And the servant took ten camels, of his master's camels, and departed (for all his master's goods were in his hand); So he got up and went to Mesopotamia, to the city of Nahor.
  • 11. And he made the camels kneel down outside the city, at a well of water, in the afternoon, at the time when the women go out to draw water.
  • 12. And he said, O LORD, the God of my master Abraham, give me a good meeting this day, and show kindness to my master Abraham.
  • 13. Behold, I am standing by the spring of water, and the daughters of the men of this city come out to draw water.
  • 14. Therefore let the maiden, to whom I say, Let down your pitcher, I pray thee, so that I may drink, and she shall say, Drink, and I will also give your camels to drink; This is the one you appointed for your servant Isaac; and may I know in this that you showed kindness to my lord.
  • 15. And it came to pass, before he had finished speaking, that, behold, Rebekah, who was born to Bethuel, the son of Milcah, the wife of Nahor, Abraham's brother, came out with her pitcher on her shoulder.
  • 16. And the damsel was very fair to look upon, a virgin, whom no man had known; and she went down to the fountain, filled her pitcher, and went up.
  • 17. Then the servant ran to meet him, and said: Please give me a little water from your pitcher to drink.
  • 18. And she said, Drink, my lord. And he hastened, and lowered his pitcher upon his hand, and gave him to drink.
  • 19. And when she had finished giving him a drink, she said: I will also take some for your camels, until they have finished drinking.
  • 20. And he hurried, and poured his pitcher into the trough, and ran again to the well to draw water, and drew it for all his camels.
  • 21. And that man was amazed at her, keeping silent, to know whether the LORD had prospered his journey or not.
  • 22. And it came to pass, when the camels had finished drinking, that the man took a gold pendant weighing half a shekel, and two bracelets for his hands weighing ten shekels of gold,
  • 23. And he said: Whose daughter are you? Tell me, I beg you; Is there a place in your father's house for us to land?
  • 24. And she said unto him, I am the daughter of Bethuel the son of Milcah, whom she bare unto Nahor.
  • 25. And he said unto him, Is there a place in your father's house for us to lodge? 26. And she said to him: There is straw and plenty of pasture, and also a place to rest.
  • 27. Then the man bowed down and worshiped the LORD.
  • 28. And he said, Blessed be the LORD God of my master Abraham, who hath not withdrawn his loving-kindness and his truth from my master; As for me, the LORD led me on the way to the house of my master's brothers.
  • 29. And the maiden ran, and announced these things in her mother's house.
  • 30. And Rebekah had a brother whose name was Laban; who ran to the man, out to the fountain.
  • 31. And it came to pass, when he saw the pendant and the bracelets upon his sister's hands, and heard the words of his sister Rebekah, who said, Thus spake that man unto me; He went to the man, who was standing by the camels, at the fountain.
  • 32. And he said unto him, Come in, thou blessed of the LORD; Why are you out? for I have prepared the house, and the place for the camels.
  • 33. And the man entered the house, and untied the camels, and gave straw and feed to the camels, and water to wash their feet, and the feet of the men that were with him.
  • 34. And he was given food; but he said, I will not eat until I have spoken my words. And he said: Speak.
  • 35. Then he said: I am Abraham's servant.
  • 36. And the LORD has blessed my master greatly, so that he has become great, and has given him sheep and herds, and silver and gold, and menservants and maidservants, and camels and asses.
  • 37. And Sarah, my master's wife, bore my master a son in her old age, and gave him all that she had.
  • 38. And my lord made me swear, saying, You shall not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, in whose land I dwell;
  • 39. But you will go to my father's house and my relatives, and you will take a wife for my son.
  • 40. Then I said to my lord, Perhaps the woman will not follow me.
  • 41. And he said to me, The LORD, before whom I walk, will send his angel with you, and he will prosper your way, that you may take a wife for my son of my kindred and of my father's house;
  • 42. Then you will be free from my oath when you come to my relatives; and if they do not give it to you, you will be free from my oath.
  • 43. And I came this day to the spring, and said, O LORD, God of my master Abraham, if thou now prosper my journey, why wilt thou not make my journey successful?
  • 44. Behold, I am by the spring of water; Therefore, the maiden who goes out to draw water, and to whom I say: I pray you, give me a little water from your pitcher to drink,
  • 45. And she will say to me, You drink, and I will also give your camels water; This is the woman whom the LORD has appointed for my master's son.
  • 46. And before I had finished speaking in my heart, behold, Rebekah came out with her pitcher on her shoulder, and went down to the spring and drew water; and I said unto him, I pray thee, give me a drink.
  • 47. And she hastened, and lowered her pitcher from upon her, and said, Drink, and I will also give thy camels to drink; and I drank, and he also gave water to the camels.
  • 48. And I asked her, and said, Whose daughter are you? And she said, I am the daughter of Bethuel the son of Nahor, whom Milcah bare unto him; then I put the pendant over her nose, and the bracelets over her hands.
  • 49. And I bowed myself, and worshiped the LORD, and blessed the LORD God of my master Abraham, who had led me in the way of truth, to take my master's brother's daughter for his son.
  • 50. Now therefore, if you will show kindness and truth to my lord, tell me; and if not, tell me so that I may turn to the right or to the left.
  • 51. And Laban and Bethuel answered, saying, This business is from the LORD; We can't speak to you bad or good.
  • 52. Behold, Rebekah is before you; Take her and go, and let her be your master's son's wife, as the LORD has said.
  • 53. And it came to pass, when Abraham's servant heard his words, that the LORD blessed him in every way.
  • 54. And the servant took out silver jewels and gold jewels and clothes, and gave them to Rebekah; He also gave precious things to his brother and mother.
  • 55. And they ate and drank, he and the men that were with him, and spent the night; and they rose up in the morning, and said, Let me go to my lord.
  • 56. And they said: Let us call the maiden, and ask her her will.
  • 57. And they called Rebekah, and said unto her, Will you go with this man? And she said: I will go.
  • 58. And they let their sister Rebekah go, and her nurse, and Abraham's servant, and his men.
  • 59. And they blessed Rebekah, and said to her: O our sister, be thou the mother of thousands of myriads, and let thy seed possess the gate of their enemies.
  • 60. And Rebekah and her servants arose, and mounted the camels, and followed the man; and the servant took Rebekah, and went away.
  • 61. And Isaac came from the way of Beer-Laai-Roi, because he dwelt in the land of the south.
  • 62. And Isaac went out to meditate in the field in the afternoon; and he lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, the camels came.
  • 63. Rebekah also lifted up her eyes, and saw Isaac, and got down from the camel.
  • 64. And he said to the servant: Who is that man who comes across the field to meet us? And the servant said: This is my lord. Then she took the veil and covered herself.
  • 65. And the servant told Isaac all the things he had done.
  • 66. And Isaac took her into the tent of his mother Sarah, and took Rebekah, and became his wife, and loved her. And Isaac was comforted after his mother's death.
  • 67. And it came to pass that Isaac brought Rebekah into the tent of his mother Sarah, and she became his wife. Isaac loved her, and thus found comfort after his mother's death.
