Sara's death

  • 1. And Sarah's life was one hundred and twenty-seven years; these were the years of Sara's life.
  • 2. And Sarah died in Kiriath-arba, which is Hebron, in the land of Canaan; and Abraham came to mourn Sarah and weep for her.
  • 3. And Abraham arose from before his dead, and spake unto the children of Heth, saying:
  • 4. I am a stranger and a pilgrim among you; give me possession of a grave with you, that I may bury my dead from before me.
  • 5. And the children of Heth answered Abraham, saying to him:
  • 6. Hear us, my lord; prince of God you are among us; bury your dead in the choicest of our graves; none of us will keep you from your grave to bury your dead.
  • 7. Then Abraham arose and bowed himself before the people of that land, before the children of Heth.
  • 8. And he spoke to them, saying, If it is your will that I bury my dead from before me, hear me, and speak for me to Ephron the son of Zoar,
  • 9. That he may give me Machpelah's cave, which he has at the end of his field; let him give it for the due price as an inheritance of burial among you.
  • 10. Now Ephron dwelt among the children of Heth; And Ephron the Hittite answered Abraham in the hearing of the children of Hittite, of all who entered the gate of his city, saying,
  • 11. No, my lord, hear me: I give you the field, I also give you the cave that is in it; before the children of my people I give it to you; bury your dead.
  • 12. Then Abraham bowed down to the people of that land.
  • 13. And he spoke to Ephron in the hearing of the people of the land, saying: But if you will indeed listen to me, I will give the price of the field; receive it from me, and I will bury my dead there.
  • 14. And Ephron answered Abraham, saying to him:
  • 15. My lord, hear me: the land is worth four hundred shekels of silver; What is this between me and you? Bury your dead.
  • 16. And Abraham listened to Ephron, and weighed out to Ephron the silver of which he had spoken in the hearing of the children of Heth, four hundred shekels of silver, current among merchants.
  • 17. So the field of Ephron, which was in Machpelah, opposite Mamre, the field and the pit that was in it, and all the trees that were in the field, which were within all its borders around,
  • 18. It was confirmed to Abraham as a possession in the eyes of the children of Heth, of all who entered the gate of his city.
  • 19. And after this Abraham buried Sarah his wife in the pit of the field of Machpelah, opposite Mamre, which is Hebron, in the land of Canaan.
  • 20. So the field and the pit that was in it were confirmed to Abraham by the sons of Heth as a burial inheritance.
