The birth of Isaac

  • 1. The Lord visited Sarah, as he had said, and did to her as he had promised.
  • 2. Sarah conceived and bore Abraham a son in his old age, at the appointed time, which God had spoken to him.
  • 3. And Abraham called the name of the son born to him, whom Sarah had borne him, Isaac.
  • 4. And Abraham circumcised his son Isaac, when he was eight days old, as God commanded him.
  • 5. And Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him.
  • 6. And Sarah said: God has made me laugh; everyone who hears it will laugh with me.
  • 7. He said further: Who would have told Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? For I gave him a son in his old age.

Hagar and Ishmael sent away

  • 8. And the child grew and was weaned; so Abraham made a great feast on the day Isaac was weaned.
  • 9. Sarah saw that the son of Hagar the Egyptian, whom she had given to Abraham, was mocking.
  • 10. Therefore he said to Abraham: Cast out this servant and her son; for the son of this servant shall not inherit with Isaac my son.
  • 11. And these words seemed hard in the eyes of Abraham, for the sake of his son.
  • 12. Then God said to him: Let it not be evil in your eyes concerning the lad and concerning your maidservant; in everything that Sarah says to you, listen to her voice; for in Isaac your descendants will be called.
  • 13. But I will also make a nation of the son of this servant, because he is your offspring.
  • 14. And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and took bread and a bottle of water, and gave them to Hagar, and laid them on her shoulder; He also gave her the boy and sent her away. She left and wandered in the wilderness of Beersheba.
  • 15. And when the water in the bottle was consumed, he threw the boy under one of the trees.
  • 16. And he sat down opposite, a bowshot away; because he said: Let him not see the boy die. And he sat down opposite, and lifted up his voice and wept.
  • 17. And God heard the voice of the child, and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven, and said to her: What ails you, Hagar? Do not be afraid, because God heard the boy's voice from where he was.
  • 18. Arise, lift the boy and take him by the hand, for I will make him a great nation.
  • 19. And God opened his eyes, and he saw a well of water; and he went and filled the bottle with water, and gave the boy a drink.
  • 20. And God was with the boy, who grew up; and he dwelt in the wilderness, and was an archer.
  • 21. And he dwelt in the wilderness of Paran; and his mother took him a wife out of the land of Egypt.

The agreement at Beersheba

  • 22. And it came to pass at that time that Abimelech, with Phichol, prince of his army, spoke to Abraham, saying: God is with you in all that you do;
  • 23. Now therefore, swear to me here by God that you will not lie to me, nor to my son, nor to my grandson; according to the kindness that I have shown you, you will do to me and to the land where you sojourned.
  • 24. And Abraham said, I swear it.
  • 25. And Abraham rebuked Abimelech because of a well of water, which his servants had violently taken.
  • 26. And Abimelech said, I know not who hath done this; neither did you make it known to me, nor did I hear it until today.
  • 27. And Abraham took sheep and herds, and gave them to Abimelech; and they both made a covenant.
  • 28. And Abraham set seven ewe lambs apart from the flock.
  • 29. Then Abimelech asked Abraham: What do these seven ewe lambs mean, which you have set aside?
  • 30. And he said, Thou shalt take these seven ewe lambs out of my hand, that they may be for me a testimony that I dug this well.
  • 31. That is why that place was called Beersheba, because there they both swore.
  • 32. So they made a covenant in Beersheba; Then Abimelech rose up, with Phichol, the prince of his army, and they returned to the land of the Philistines.
  • 33. And he planted a grove in Beersheba, and there he called upon the name of the Lord God everlasting.
  • 34. And Abraham sojourned in the land of the Philistines many days.
