Sodom and Gomorrah destroyed

  • 1. The two angels arrived in Sodom in the afternoon, when Lot was sitting at the gate of Sodom. When he saw them, he stood up to meet them and prostrated himself with his face to the ground;
  • 2. and said: Behold now, my lords, go in, I pray you, into your servant's house, and spend the night there, and wash your feet; and early in the morning you will rise and go your way. They replied: No, because we will spend the night in the square.
  • 3. But he fought with them greatly, and they went with him, and entered his house; and he made them a feast, and baked cakes without yeast, and they ate.
  • 4. But before they lay down, the men of that city, the men of Sodom, from young to old, surrounded the house; all the people from all the neighborhoods.
  • 5. And they called Lot, and said unto him, Where are the men that came unto thee this night? Bring them out to us so that we may know them.
  • 6. Then Lot went out to them at the door, and shut the door behind him,
  • 7. and said: My brethren, I beseech you, do not do so evil.
  • 8. Behold, I have two daughters, who have not yet known men; I will bring them outside to you, and you will do with them as is good in your eyes; only do nothing to these men, because that is why they came under the shadow of my roof.
  • 9.But they said: Get out of there. They said further: As a foreigner, this individual came to live here, and would he want to be a judge in everything? Now we will do more harm to you than to them. And they threw themselves on the man, on Lot, and approached to break down the door.
  • 10. But those men stretched out their hands, and pulled Lot in to themselves, and shut the door;
  • 11. and they struck the men at the door of the house with blindness, from the youngest to the oldest, so that they were tired to find the door.
  • 12. And the men said unto Lot, Hast thou any one else here? Son-in-law, and your sons, and your daughters, and all that you have in this city, take him out of this place;
  • 13. for we will destroy this place, because its cry has increased before the face of the Lord, and the Lord has sent us to destroy it.
  • 14. Then Lot went out, and spoke to his sons-in-law, who were to marry his daughters, and said, Get up, get out of this place, for the Lord will destroy the city. But it seemed to his sons-in-law that he was mocking.
  • 15. And at dawn the angels pressed Lot, saying: Arise, take your wife and your two daughters who are here, lest you perish in the punishment of the city.
  • 16. But he lingered; So the men took him by the hand, his wife, and his two daughters, the Lord being merciful to him, and brought him out and placed him outside the city.
  • 17. It came to pass, when they had brought them out, that one of them said, Escape for your life; do not look behind you, and do not stop in every field; escape to the mountain, lest you perish.
  • 18. But Lot said to them: Ah! no, my Lord!
  • 19. Behold, now thy servant hath found favor in thy sight, and thou hast magnified thy mercy which thou hast shown me, to keep my life; but I cannot escape to the mountain, lest this evil overtake me, and I die.
  • 20. Behold, now that city is near, to flee thither, and it is small; Now, let me escape there (isn't she small?), so that my soul may live.
  • 21. He said to him: Behold, I have accepted you also in this business, so as not to overthrow the city of which you spoke.
  • 22. Make haste, escape there; because I can't do anything until you get there. That's why the name of the city was called Zoar.
  • 23. The sun was already rising over the land when Lot arrived in Zoar.
  • 24. Then the Lord rained sulfur and fire from the Lord out of heaven on Sodom and Gomorrah;
  • 25. and destroyed those cities and all the countryside, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and what grew from the land.
  • 26. And Lot's wife looked back and was turned into a pillar of salt.
  • 27. And Abraham went up early in the morning to the place where he had stood before the face of the Lord;
  • 28. and he beheld Sodom and Gomorrah and all the land of the plain, and saw, and behold, smoke was rising from the land, like that of a furnace.
  • 29. And it came to pass, when God destroyed the cities of the plain, that God remembered Abraham, and brought Lot out of the midst of the destruction, when he destroyed the cities in which Lot had dwelt.

Lot and his daughters

  • 30. Lot therefore went up from Zoar, and dwelt in the mountain, and his two daughters with him; for he feared to dwell in Zoar, and he dwelt in a cave, he and his two daughters.
  • 31. Then the firstborn said to the youngest, Our father is old, and there is no man in the land to come among us, according to the custom of all the land.
  • 32. Come, let us give our father wine to drink, and let us lie down with him, that we may preserve our father's descendants.
  • 33. And they gave their father wine to drink that night; and the firstborn came, and lay down with her father, and he knew not when she lay down, nor when she arose.
  • 34. The next day the firstborn said to the youngest: Behold, I lay with my father last night; We gave him wine to drink this night too; then go in and lie down with him, so that we may preserve the descendants of our father.
  • 35. And they gave their father wine to drink that night also; Then the younger one got up and lay down with him, and he didn't notice when she lay down, nor when he got up.
  • 36. So Lot's two daughters conceived by their father.
  • 37. The firstborn gave birth to a son and called his name Moab; This is the father of the Moabites to this day.
  • 38. The younger woman also gave birth to a son and named him Ben-Ammi; This is the father of the children of Ammon to this day.
