  • 4. These are the origins of the heavens and the earth, when they were created; in the day that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens,
  • 5. There was as yet no field plant in the land, for no grass of the field had yet sprouted; for the Lord God had not caused it to rain on the land, nor was there any man to till the land.
  • 6. But a vapor came up from the earth, and watered the whole face of the earth.
  • 7. And the Lord God formed man from the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
  • 8. And the Lord God planted a garden in Eden, toward the east, and there he placed the man whom he had formed.
  • 9. And the Lord God made to grow out of the ground every tree that was pleasant to the sight and good for food, as well as the tree of life in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
  • 10. And a river came out of Eden to water the garden, and from there it divided and became four branches.
  • 11. The name of the first is Pishon; This is the one that surrounds all the land of Havilah, where there is gold;
  • 12. and the gold of that land is good; there is bdellium, and onyx, and beryl stone.
  • 13. The name of the second river is Gihon; This is the one that surrounds the entire land of Cush.
  • 14. The name of the third river is Tigris; this is the one that goes to the east of Assyria; and the fourth river is the Euphrates.
  • 15. So the Lord God took the man and placed him in the garden of Eden to cultivate it and keep it.
  • 16. And the Lord God commanded him: Of every tree of the garden thou shalt eat freely,
  • 17. but you shall not eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil; for in the day that you eat of it, you will surely die.
  • 18. And the Lord God said, It is not good for the man to be alone; I will make him a helper suitable for him.
  • 19. When the Lord God had formed out of the ground all the beasts of the field and all the birds of the air, he brought them to the man to see what he would call them; and whatever man called every living creature, that was his name.
  • 20. So the man gave names to all the domestic animals, to the birds of the air and to all the animals of the field; but for the man there was no suitable helper found.
  • 21. Then the Lord God caused a heavy sleep to fall upon the man, and he fell asleep; and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place.
  • 22. And from the rib which the Lord God took from the man, he formed a woman, and brought her to the man.
  • 23. And the man said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh; she will be called woman, because she was taken from man.
  • 24. Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother, and shall cling to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.
  • 25. And they were both naked, the man and his wife; and they were not ashamed.
