Exodus – Old Testament

Rock water

  • 1. The entire community of Israelites left the wilderness of Sin, marching according to the commands of the Lord. They camped in Rephidim, but there was no water there for the people to drink.
  • 2. Then the people began to argue with Moses, saying, “Give us water to drink!” Moses answered them, “Why are you arguing with me? Why are you putting the Lord to the test?”
  • 3. But the people, thirsty for water, continued to complain against Moses, saying, “Why did you bring us out of Egypt? Was it to make us, our children and our cattle die of thirst?”
  • 4. Moses cried out to the Lord, “What shall I do with these people? They’re almost ready to stone me!”
  • 5. The Lord answered Moses, “Go ahead of the people and take some of the leaders of Israel with you. Take the staff with which you struck the river and go.
  • 6. I am waiting for you there, by the rock, on Mount Horeb. Strike the rock, and water will come out of it for the people to drink.” This is what Moses did, in the eyes of the leaders of Israel.
  • 7. He called that place Massah and Meribah, because of the Israelites' argument and because they put the Lord to the test, saying, “Is the Lord among us or not?”

The defeat of the Amelekites

  • 8. Then the Amalekites came and attacked the Israelites at Rephidim.
  • 9. Moses said to Joshua, “Choose some men and go fight the Amalekites tomorrow. I will stand on top of the mountain with the staff of God in my hand.”
  • 10. Joshua did as Moses commanded him and fought against the Amalekites, while Moses, Aaron and Hur went up to the top of the mountain.
  • 11. As long as Moses held his arms high, Israel prevailed; when he lowered them, Amalek prevailed.
  • 12. When Moses was tired, they took a stone and placed it under him so that he could sit down. Aaron and Hur supported his arms, one on each side, so that his hands remained firm until the sun went down.
  • 13. So Joshua defeated Amalek and his army with the edge of the sword.
  • 14. The Lord said to Moses, “Write this in a book as something to be remembered, and make Joshua hear it, for I will blot out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven.”
  • 15. Moses built an altar and called it “The Lord is my banner.”
  • 16. He said, “Because he has lifted up his hand against the throne of the Lord, the Lord will wage war against Amalek from generation to generation.”
