The song of Moses

  • 1. Then Moses and the Israelites sang this song to the Lord:
  • “I will sing to the Lord, for he is highly exalted. He threw the horse and its rider into the sea.
  • 2. The Lord is my strength and my song; he is my salvation. He is my God, and I will praise him, the God of my father, and I will exalt him.
  • 3. The Lord is a warrior; his name is the Lord.
  • 4. He threw Pharaoh's chariots and his army into the sea; Drowned Pharaoh's best warriors in the Red Sea.
  • 5. The waves covered them; They fell into the depths like a stone.
  • 6. Your right hand, Lord, was majestic in power. Your right hand, Lord, has destroyed the enemy.
  • 7. In the greatness of your majesty you overthrew those who rose up against you. You unleashed your wrath; consumed them like chaff.
  • 8. When it blew from your nose, the waters piled up. The currents flowed, the waves rose like a wall, the abysses solidified in the heart of the sea.
  • 9. The enemy said, 'I will pursue and overtake; I will divide the spoils; I will satisfy my greed in them. I will draw my sword, my hand will destroy its inhabitants.'
  • 10. But you blow with your breath, and the sea covers them. They sank like lead in the turbulent waters.
  • 11. Who among the gods is like you, Lord? Who is like you, majestic in holiness, terrible in glorious deeds, performing wonders?
  • 12. You stretched out your right hand, and the earth swallowed them.
  • 13. With your love you lead the people you rescued; with your strength you guide him to your holy dwelling.
  • 14. The people will hear him and tremble; anguish will grip the inhabitants of Philistia.
  • 15. The rulers of Edom will be terrified, and trembling will take hold of the mighty men of Moab; all the inhabitants of Canaan will faint from fear.
  • 16. Horror and dread will fall upon them; By the power of your arm they will be paralyzed like a stone, until your people have passed by, Lord, until the people you acquired have passed by.
  • 17. You will take them and plant them on the mountain of your inheritance, in the place you prepared for your dwelling, in the sanctuary that your hands established, O Lord.
  • 18. The Lord will reign forever and ever!”
  • 19. When Pharaoh's horses, his chariots, and his horsemen entered the sea, the Lord caused the waters of the sea to return upon them, but the Israelites crossed the sea on dry land.
  • 20. Then Miriam the prophetess, Aaron's sister, took a tambourine, and all the women followed her, playing tambourines and dancing.
  • 21. And Miriam sang to them in response:
  • “Sing to the Lord, for he is highly exalted. He threw the horse and its rider into the sea.”

The waters of Marah and Elim

  • 22. Then Moses led Israel from the Red Sea, and they went out into the desert of Shur. They walked in the desert for three days, but found no water.
  • 23. They came to Marah, but they could not drink the water of Marah, because it was bitter. Therefore, the place was called Mara.
  • 24. Then the people murmured against Moses, saying, “What shall we drink?”
  • 25. Moses cried out to the Lord, and the Lord showed him a tree. Moses threw it into the water, and the water became sweet. There the Lord gave a decree and a law, and there he put it to the test.
  • 26. He said, “If you listen carefully to the voice of the Lord your God and do what is right in his eyes, if you listen to his commandments and obey all his decrees, I will not bring upon you any of the diseases which I brought upon the Egyptians, for I am the Lord who heals them.”
  • 27. Then they came to Elim, where there were twelve springs and seventy palm trees; and they camped by the water.
