The locust plague

  • 1. Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go to Pharaoh, for I have hardened his heart and the hearts of his officials, so that I may show them my signs.
  • 2. Then you will tell your children and grandchildren how I mocked the Egyptians and how I performed my miraculous signs among them. Then you will know that I am the Lord.”
  • 3. Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and said to him, “This is what the Lord, the God of the Hebrews, says: ‘How long will you refuse to humble yourself before me? Let my people go, so that they may worship me.
  • 4. If you refuse to let my people go, tomorrow I will bring locusts into your territory.
  • 5. They will cover the face of the ground, so that you will not be able to see it. They will devour what is left of the hail and destroy every tree that has sprouted in the field.
  • 6. and they will fill your houses, the houses of your officials and the houses of all the Egyptians—something your ancestors and their ancestors have never seen from the day they existed until this day.'” Then Moses turned and went out from Pharaoh.
  • 7. Pharaoh's officials said to him, “How long will this man be a snare to us? Let the men go and worship the Lord your God. Have you not yet realized that Egypt is ruined?”
  • 8. Then Moses and Aaron were brought back to Pharaoh, and he said to them, “Go, worship the Lord your God. But who are the ones who will go?”
  • 9. Moses replied, “We will go with our young and old, with our sons and daughters, with our flocks and herds, because we must celebrate a festival to the Lord.”
  • 10. He replied, “The Lord be with you if I let you and your children go! You are clearly plotting evil.
  • 11. No! Only you men go and worship the Lord, for that is what you asked.” Then Moses and Aaron were driven out from Pharaoh’s presence.
  • 12. Then the Lord said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand over the land of Egypt, so that the locusts will come and devour all the vegetation, everything left over from the hail.”
  • 13. Moses stretched out his staff over Egypt, and the Lord caused an east wind to blow across the land all that day and all that night. When morning came, the east wind had brought the locusts.
  • 14. The locusts invaded all Egypt and settled throughout the land of Egypt in great numbers. There have never been so many locusts before, nor will there ever be again.
  • 15. They covered the whole face of the land and darkened it. They devoured all the vegetation of the field and all the fruit of the trees that had been left by the hail. There was nothing green left on the trees or plants of the field throughout all Egypt.
  • 16. Pharaoh hurriedly summoned Moses and Aaron and said, “I have sinned against the Lord your God and against you.
  • 17. Now forgive my sin one more time, and pray to the Lord your God that he will remove this deadly plague from me.”
  • 18. Moses left Pharaoh's presence and prayed to the Lord.
  • 19. Then the Lord caused a strong west wind to blow, and it carried away the locusts and threw them into the Red Sea. Not a single locust was left in all the land of Egypt.
  • 20. But the Lord hardened Pharaoh's heart, and he would not let the Israelites go.

The Plague of Darkness

  • 21. Then the Lord said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand toward the sky, and there will be darkness over Egypt—a darkness greater than any other.”
  • 22. Moses stretched out his hand toward the sky, and for three days there was total darkness over all Egypt.
  • 23. No one could see anyone or move from his place for three days. Yet all the Israelites had light in the places where they lived.
  • 24. Then Pharaoh called Moses and said, “Go, worship the Lord. Let your sons go with you, but leave the sheep and herds here.”
  • 25. Moses replied, “You yourself must provide us with the animals for the sacrifices and burnt offerings that we will make to the Lord our God.
  • 26. We will also take our livestock with us, because we need them to worship the Lord our God. We do not know what animals we will have to offer to the Lord until we get there.”
  • 27. But the Lord hardened Pharaoh's heart, and he refused to let them go.
  • 28. Then Pharaoh said to Moses, “Get out of my sight! Be careful that you do not appear before me again! The day you see me you will surely die.”
  • 29. “Very well,” Moses replied, “you yourself said that you would never see him again.”
