Love and fidelity to God

  • 1. These are the words which the Lord commanded me to teach you, O Israel. Make every effort to fulfill them in the land you are about to possess.
  • 2. So you will fear the Lord your God and obey all his decrees and commandments, which I command you, you, your children and your grandchildren, all the days of your life. This way, you will have a long life.
  • 3. Therefore, O Israel, listen carefully and do carefully what I command you. In this way everything will go well with you and you will multiply greatly in the land flowing with milk and honey, as the Lord, the God of your ancestors, promised you.
  • 4. “Hear, O Israel! The Lord, our God, is the only Lord!
  • 5. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.
  • 6. These words that I command you today will be in your heart.
  • 7. Teach them frequently to your children. Talk about them when you are at home, when you are walking, when you lie down and when you get up.
  • 8. Tie them as a sign on your hands and fasten them on your forehead.
  • 9. Write them on the doorposts of your houses and on your gates.
  • 10. “When the Lord your God brings you into the land he promised to your ancestors Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, with large and prosperous cities that you did not build,
  • 11. houses full of all the good things that you did not produce, cisterns that you did not dig, and vineyards and olive trees that you did not plant, and when you eat until you are satisfied,
  • 12. Be careful not to forget the Lord, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.
  • 13. Fear only the Lord your God and worship only him. Swear your oaths only in his name.
  • 14. Do not worship other gods, the gods of the people around you,
  • 15. for the Lord your God is a jealous God. The anger of the Lord your God will burn against you and will destroy you from the face of the earth.
  • 16. “Do not provoke the Lord your God to anger, as you did at Massah.
  • 17. Carefully observe the commandments of the Lord your God and obey all his decrees and commandments.
  • 18. Do what is right and good in the sight of the Lord, so that it may go well with you and you may enter and possess the good land that the Lord promised your ancestors,
  • 19. driving out all your enemies before you, as the Lord promised.
  • 20. “In the future, when your children ask you, 'What is the meaning of the commandments, decrees, and laws that the Lord our God has commanded you?'
  • 21. say to them, 'We were Pharaoh's slaves in Egypt, but the Lord brought us out of there with a mighty hand.
  • 22. The Lord performed signs and wonders, great and terrible, against Egypt, against Pharaoh and all his family, before our eyes.
  • 23. He brought us from that place to give us the land he swore to give to our ancestors.
  • 24. The Lord commanded us to obey all these decrees and to fear the Lord our God, for our own good and to keep us alive, as we have done to this day.
  • 25. If we obey all the commandments of the Lord our God, as he commanded us, it will be fair to us.'
