  • 1. Then Moses called together all the people of Israel and said to them: “Listen, O Israel, to the decrees and laws that I teach you today. Learn them and follow them carefully.
  • 2. The Lord our God made a covenant with us in Horeb.
  • 3. It was not with our ancestors that the Lord made this covenant, but with us, all of us who are alive here today.
  • 4. The Lord spoke to you face to face on the mountain, from the midst of the fire.
  • 5. At that time I was between the Lord and you to convey the Lord's message to you, because you were afraid of the fire and did not climb the mountain. He said:
  • 6. 'I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.
  • 7. 'You will have no other gods besides me.
  • 8. 'You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or in the earth beneath, or in the waters under the earth.
  • 9. 'You shall not bow down to them or worship them, for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generation of those who despise me,
  • 10. but that I treat with kindness to a thousand generations those who love me and keep my commandments.
  • 11. 'You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not leave anyone who takes his name in vain unpunished.
  • 12. 'You shall keep the Sabbath day to keep it holy, as the Lord your God has commanded you.
  • 13. You will work six days and in them you will do all your work,
  • 14. but the seventh day is the Sabbath dedicated to the Lord your God. On that day you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your sons or daughters, nor your male or female servants, nor your oxen, nor your donkeys or other animals, nor the foreigners who live in your cities. In this way, all your servants will be able to rest like you.
  • 15. 'Remember that you were a slave in Egypt and that the Lord your God brought you out of there with a mighty hand and a strong arm. Therefore the Lord your God commanded you to keep the Sabbath day.
  • 16. 'Honor your father and your mother, as the Lord your God commanded you, so that you may live long and that everything may go well with you in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.
  • 17. 'Thou shalt not kill.
  • 18. 'Thou shalt not commit adultery.
  • 19. 'Thou shalt not steal.
  • 20. 'You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
  • 21. 'You shall not covet your neighbor's wife. You shall not desire your neighbor's house, nor his field, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor anything that belongs to him.'
  • 22. These words the Lord spoke to you, the whole assembly, on the mountain, out of the fire, the cloud and the darkness, with a loud voice, and added nothing. He wrote them on two stone tablets and handed them to me.
  • 23. When you heard the voice out of the darkness, while the mountain was burning with fire, all the leaders of the tribes and their elders came to me.
  • 24. And you said, 'The Lord our God has shown us his glory and his majesty, and we have heard his voice out of the midst of the fire. Today we saw that God can speak to a human being, and he or she will still be alive.
  • 25. But now, why should we die? This great fire will consume us. If we continue to listen to the voice of the Lord our God, we will die.
  • 26. For who, of all mankind, heard, as we did, the voice of the living God speaking from the midst of the fire and survived?
  • 27. Go near, Moses, and listen to everything the Lord our God says. Then tell us everything he tells you, and we will listen and obey you.'
  • 28. The Lord heard what you said to me and said to me, 'Listen to what these people told you. Everything they said is right.
  • 29. I wish they always had such a heart to fear me and to obey all my commandments. This way everything would go well for them and their descendants forever!
  • 30. Go and say to them: Return to your tents.
  • 31. But you stay here with me, and I will give you all the commandments, decrees and laws that you must teach them so that they may fulfill them in the land that I am giving them to possess.'
  • 32. Be careful to do everything that the Lord your God has commanded you; do not deviate either to the right or to the left.
  • 33. Always follow the path that the Lord your God has commanded you, so that you may live and prosper and have a long life in the land that you will possess.
