Moses blesses the tribes

  • 1. This is the blessing that Moses, the man of God, pronounced upon the Israelites before his death.
  • 2. He said: “The Lord came from Sinai, he shone upon them from Seir, he shone from Mount Paran. He came with myriads of saints, from his hands came the law for the people.
  • 3. Surely you love your people; all your saints are in your hands. They bow before you and receive from your wisdom and instruction.
  • 4. Moses gave us the law, an inheritance of the assembly of Jacob.
  • 5. He was king in Jeshurun, when the leaders of the people gathered together, together with the tribes of Israel.
  • 6. May Reuben live and not die, even though they are few in number.”
  • 7. And concerning Judah he said: “O Lord, hear the cry of Judah, bring him back to his people. May your hands fight for him, may you be his help against his enemies!”
  • 8. And about Levi he said: “Your Thummim and your Urim belong to him whom you love. You tested him at Massá, you fought with him at the waters of Meribah.
  • 9. He said of his father and mother, 'I don't recognize them.' He did not consider his brothers, nor did he know their children. They observed your word and kept your covenant.
  • 10. They will teach your precepts to Jacob, your law to Israel. They will offer incense on your altar, complete burnt offerings.
  • 11. Bless, O Lord, their efforts, approve the work of their hands. Break the loins of their enemies who rise up against them, of those who hate them, so that they will not rise up again.”
  • 12. And about Benjamin he said: “The beloved of the Lord will rest in him, he will protect her at all times, and the beloved of the Lord will rest safely in the arms of the Most High.”
  • 13. And concerning Joseph he said: “May the Lord bless your land with the dew of heaven, with the abundance of waters from beneath the ground;
  • 14. with the best fruits of the sun, with the riches produced by the moon;
  • 15. with the best products of the eternal hills, with the blessings of the eternal mountain;
  • 16. with the best gifts of the earth and its fullness. May all these blessings rest upon the head of Joseph, upon the crown of the head of the chosen one among his brothers.
  • 17. He has the majesty of a bull, with horns like those of a wild ox; with them he will smite the nations, even the most distant. These are the countless tribes of Ephraim, these are the thousands of Manasseh.”
  • 18. And concerning Zebulun he said: “Rejoice, Zebulun, in your journeys, and Issachar in your tents.
  • 19. The people will call you to the mountain, there they will offer sacrifices of righteousness, and they will be satisfied with the abundance of the seas, with the hidden treasures of the beach.”
  • 20. And about Gad he said: “Blessed is he who enlarges Gad! Gad lives in safety like a lion, tearing apart his arm and head.
  • 21. He chose for himself the best portion, because there was reserved a part of the leader. He came with the leaders of the people and executed the justice of the Lord, together with Israel.”
  • 22. And concerning Dan he said: “Dan is a lion's whelp, leaping out of Bashan.”
  • 23. And about Naphtali he said: “Naphtali is pleased with the favor of the Lord and with the blessings he has received. He will possess the west and the south.”
  • 24. And concerning Asher he said: “Blessed be Asher among the children of Israel! He will be favored by his brothers and will bathe his feet in oil.
  • 25. May your bars be of iron and bronze, and your strength will last as long as you live.
  • 26. There is no God like the God of Jeshurun, who rides upon the heavens to help you, who rides upon the clouds in his majesty.
  • 27. The eternal God is your refuge, and under his eternal arms he will drive out the enemy from before you, saying: 'Destroy them!'
  • 28. The people of Israel will dwell in security, the fountain of Jacob will live in a land of wheat and new wine, where the sky drips with dew.
  • 29. How happy you are, O Israel! Who is like you, a people saved by the Lord? He is your shield and your glorious sword. Your enemies will be subdued before you, and you will tread upon their hills.”
