The altar on Mount Ebal

  • 1. Moses, accompanied by the leaders of Israel, commanded the people: “Listen carefully to this entire law that I am giving you today.
  • 2. When you cross the Jordan and enter the land that the Lord your God is giving you, build large stones and cover them with lime.
  • 3. Write on them all the words of this law, as soon as you enter the land that the Lord your God is giving you, a land abundant in milk and honey, as He promised your ancestors.
  • 4. As you cross the Jordan, set up these stones on Mount Ebal, as I am commanding you today, and cover them with lime.
  • 5. On the mountain, build an altar to the Lord your God, an altar made of rough stones. Do not use iron tools on the stones.
  • 6. Build the altar of the Lord your God with unhewn stones, and offer burnt offerings to the Lord your God on it.
  • 7. Also offer sacrifices of communion, eat and rejoice before the Lord your God.
  • 8. On the stones that you build, write clearly all the words of this law.”

  • 14. “Then the Levites will say in a loud voice to all the people of Israel:
