A single place of worship

  • 1. “These are the regulations and ordinances that you must observe while you are living in the land that the Lord, the God of your ancestors, gave you as an inheritance.
  • 2. Completely destroy all the places where the nations you are driving out worship their gods, both on high mountains and hills and under leafy trees.
  • 3. Tear down their altars, break their sacred pillars and burn their sacred poles. Shatter the idols of your gods and erase their names from these places.
  • 4. However, you will not worship the Lord your God in the same way as they worship their gods.
  • 5. Instead, look for the place that the Lord your God will choose among all the tribes, where he will put his name and make his home. That's where you should go.
  • 6. Bring your burnt offerings, sacrifices, tithes, special offerings, and everything you have promised to the Lord, as well as your freewill offerings and the firstfruits of your flocks.
  • 7. There, before the Lord your God, you and your families will eat and rejoice in everything you do, for the Lord your God will bless you.
  • 8. “Don’t act like we are acting here, each one doing what they think is best.
  • 9. For you have not yet reached the place of rest and the inheritance that the Lord your God is giving you.
  • 10. But as soon as you cross the Jordan and settle in the land that the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance, he will give you rest from all the enemies around you, and you will live in safety.
  • 11. Then take everything I command you to the place the Lord your God chooses to put his name: burnt offerings, sacrifices, tithes, special offerings, and everything you have promised to the Lord.
  • 12. Rejoice before the Lord your God, along with your sons and daughters, your male and female servants, and the Levites who live in your cities, for they have no land or inheritance.
  • 13. Be careful not to abandon the Levites while you live in the land.
  • 14. When the Lord your God expands your territory as he promised, and you want to eat meat, you can eat meat to your heart's content.
  • 15. However, if the place that the Lord your God chooses to put his name is far away, you may slaughter animals in any city, according to the blessing that the Lord your God gives you. Both the clean and the unclean may eat them, as if they were gazelle or deer meat.
  • 16. However, do not eat the blood; pour it on the ground like water.
  • 17. You may not eat in your cities the tithe of your grain, of the new wine, of the oil, or the firstfruits of your flocks, or any offering you have promised, or your voluntary or special offerings.
  • 18. Instead, you must eat them in the presence of the Lord your God in the place he chooses: you, your sons and daughters, your male and female servants, and the Levites in your cities. Rejoice before the Lord your God in everything you do.
  • 19. Be careful not to abandon the Levites while you live in the land.
  • 20. “When the Lord your God expands your territory as he promised, and you want to eat meat, you can eat meat as much as you want.
  • 21. If the place that the Lord your God chooses to put his name is far away, you may slaughter animals in any city, according to the blessing that the Lord your God gives you. Both the clean and the unclean may eat them, as if they were gazelle or deer meat.
  • 22. However, do not eat the blood; pour it on the ground like water.
  • 23. You will not be able to eat it; in this way, everything will go well with you and your children, as you will be doing what is right before the Lord.
  • 24. Be careful not to offer your burnt offerings anywhere you wish.
  • 25. Instead, take them to the place that the Lord your God chooses among your tribes, and there they present their burnt offerings, both flesh and blood, on the altar of the Lord your God. But you can eat the meat.
  • 26. As for the consecrated objects that you have and what you have promised, take them to the place that the Lord chooses.
  • 27. Offer your burnt offerings, your flesh and your blood, on the altar of the Lord your God. The blood of the offerings will be spilled at the altar, but you will be able to eat the meat.
  • 28. Observe all these regulations that I am giving you, and everything will go well with you and with your children, because you will do what is good and right before the Lord your God.
  • 29. The Lord your God will drive out the nations before you as you advance. But when they have defeated them and are living in their lands,
  • 30. be careful not to fall into the trap of imitating the practices of these nations. Do not ask, 'How do these nations serve their gods? We will do the same!'
  • 31. Do not worship the Lord your God in the same way they worship their gods, for they do abominable things that the Lord hates, including burning their own sons and daughters as sacrifices.
  • 32. Faithfully follow all the commandments I am giving you; do not add or take anything away from them.
