God's great deeds

  • 1. “Love the Lord your God and always follow his precepts, decrees, ordinances and commandments.
  • 2. Remember that it was not your children who witnessed and saw the discipline of the Lord, your God, his majesty, his mighty arm.
  • 3. You have seen the signs that he performed and all that he did in the heart of Egypt, both with Pharaoh king of Egypt and with all his land;
  • 4. what he did to the Egyptian army, with their horses and chariots, how he surprised them with the waters of the Red Sea when they were pursuing you, and how the Lord completely destroyed them.
  • 5. You also saw what he did for you in the wilderness until you came to this place,
  • 6. and how he treated Dathan and Abiram, sons of Eliab, of the tribe of Reuben, when the earth opened and swallowed them up together with their families, tents and everything they owned, in the midst of all Israel.
  • 7. You yourselves have witnessed with your own eyes all these great things that the Lord has done.
  • 8. “Therefore, obey every law that I am giving you today, so that you will have the strength to enter and conquer the land where you are going.
  • 9. And that they may live long in the land which the Lord promised to give to their ancestors and to their descendants, a land where there is an abundance of milk and honey.
  • 10. This land that you are going to possess is not like the land of Egypt, where you came from, where you had to plant seeds and irrigate manually, like in a garden.
  • 11. But the land to which they are going, crossing the Jordan, is a land of mountains and valleys, watered by rain from heaven.
  • 12. It is a land that the Lord your God cares for; your eyes will always be on her, from the beginning to the end of the year.
  • 13. Therefore, if you faithfully obey the commandments I am giving you today, loving the Lord your God and serving him with all your heart and with all your soul,
  • 14. Then, at the right time, I will send rain on your land, autumn and spring rain, so that you can harvest your grain and have new wine and oil.
  • 15. The land will provide pasture for your flocks, and you will have plenty of food and be satisfied.
  • 16. “Be careful not to be deceived into worshiping other gods and bowing down to them.
  • 17. If you do this, the anger of the Lord will burn against you; he will close the sky and the earth will produce nothing, and you will soon disappear from the good land that the Lord is giving you.
  • 18. Engrave these words in your heart and mind; tie them as a sign on your hands and fasten them to your forehead.
  • 19. Teach them to your children, talk about them when you are at home and when you walk along the path, when you lie down and when you get up.
  • 20. Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates,
  • 21. so that you and your children may have many days in the land that the Lord swore to give to your ancestors, as many as the days in which heaven is above the earth.
  • 22. “If you obey all the commandments I am giving you, loving the Lord your God, following all his ways and holding fast to him,
  • 23. the Lord will drive out all these nations from your presence, and you will conquer nations greater and more powerful than yourselves.
  • 24. Every place you pass will be yours. Its territory will extend from the desert of Lebanon and the Euphrates River to the Western Sea.
  • 25. No one will be able to resist you. As the Lord promised, he will cause fear and terror in all the people you pass through.
  • 26. “Pay attention! Today I am placing before you the blessing and the curse.
  • 27. You will be blessed if you obey the commandments of the Lord your God that I am giving you today;
  • 28. but you will be cursed if you disobey the commandments of the Lord your God and turn away from the path I am commanding you, following unknown gods.
  • 29. When the Lord your God brings you to the land you are about to possess, you must proclaim the blessing on Mount Gerizim and the curse on Mount Ebal.
  • 30. These mountains are beyond the Jordan, west of the way of the setting sun, in the land of the Canaanites who live in the Arabah, near the oaks of Moreh, near Gilgal.
  • 31. You are about to cross the Jordan to take possession of the land that the Lord your God is giving you. When they conquer it and are living in it,
  • 32. be careful to obey all the decrees and ordinances that I am giving you today.
