Deuteronomy - Old Testament
Deuteronomy – Old Testament

Joshua successor of Moses

  • 1. Moses addressed all Israel and said:
  • 2. “I am one hundred and twenty years old and I can no longer lead them. The Lord said to me, 'You will not cross the Jordan.'
  • 3. But the Lord your God will go before you. He himself will destroy these nations before you, and you will take possession of their land. Joshua will go before you, as the Lord promised.
  • 4. The Lord will do to them the same as he did to Sihon and Og, kings of the Amorites, whom he destroyed along with their lands.
  • 5. The Lord will hand them over to you, and you will do with them everything I have commanded you.
  • 6. Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified before them, for the Lord your God will accompany you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.”
  • 7. Then Moses called Joshua and, in the presence of all Israel, said to him, “Be strong and courageous, for you will go with this people to the land that the Lord swore to their ancestors to give to them, and you will divide it among them as an inheritance.
  • 8. The Lord will go before you. He will be with you; will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid! Don’t be discouraged!”

Reading the law

  • 9. Moses wrote this law and gave it to the priests, who were of the tribe of Levi, who carried the ark of the covenant of the Lord, and to all the leaders of Israel.
  • 10. And Moses commanded them: “At the end of every seven years, in the year of release, during the festival of Booths,
  • 11. When all Israel comes to appear before the Lord your God in the place he chooses, you shall read this law before all Israel, so that they may hear it.
  • 12. Gather the people together: men, women, children and foreigners who are in your cities, so that they may hear and learn to fear the Lord their God, and be careful to follow all the words of this law.
  • 13. So the children who do not know it will listen to it and learn to fear the Lord their God all the days that they live in the land that you are about to possess when you cross the Jordan.”

The Succession of Moses

  • 14. Then the Lord said to Moses, “The day of your death is approaching. Call Joshua and present yourselves at the Tent of Meeting, so that I may commission him.” Moses and Joshua went and presented themselves at the Tent of Meeting.
  • 15. Then the Lord appeared in the tent in a pillar of cloud, and the pillar stood over the entrance to the tent.
  • 16. And the Lord said to Moses, “You are about to rest with your ancestors, and this people will rise up to prostitute themselves, following the foreign gods of the land they are entering. They will abandon me and break the covenant I made with them.
  • 17. On that day my anger will burn against them, and I will abandon them. I will hide their faces, and they will be destroyed. Many evils and afflictions will befall them, and on that day they will ask, 'Have these evils not come upon us because our God is no longer with us?'
  • 18. But I will certainly hide my face on that day because of all the evil they have done in turning to other gods.
  • 19. Now write this song for yourselves and teach it to the Israelites. Put it in their mouths, so that this song may serve as a testimony to me against the people of Israel.
  • 20. When I bring them into the land flowing with milk and honey, the land I swore to their ancestors, and they eat until they are satisfied and prosper, and turn to other gods and worship them, rejecting me and breaking my alliance,
  • 21. then, when many evils and afflictions overtake them, this song will testify against them, for it will not be forgotten by their descendants. For I know the purpose they have in mind even before I bring them into the land I promised them under oath.”
  • 22. That same day Moses wrote this song and taught it to the Israelites.
  • 23. And the Lord commanded Joshua son of Nun: “Be strong and courageous, for you will lead the Israelites into the land that I swore to them, and I myself will be with you.”
  • 24. After Moses finished writing in a book the words of this law from beginning to end,
  • 25. He gave the following order to the Levites who carried the ark of the covenant of the Lord:
  • 26. “Put this book of the Law beside the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God, so that it may stand there as a witness against you.
  • 27. For I know your rebellion and your stubbornness. If they are already being rebellious with the Lord while I am still alive, how much more so after my death!
  • 28. Gather before me all the tribes of Israel, along with their leaders and officials, so that I can speak these words in their presence and call heaven and earth as witnesses against them.
  • 29. For I know that after my death you will become corrupt and turn away from the way I commanded you. Disaster will come upon you in the last days, because you will do evil in the eyes of the Lord, provoking him to anger with the works of your hands.”

The song of Moses

  • 30. Then Moses recited, before the entire assembly of Israel, the words of this song, from beginning to end.
