David and Mephibosheth

  • 1. On a certain occasion, David asked: “Is there still anyone in Saul’s family to whom I can show loyalty, out of love for my friendship with Jonathan?”
  • 2. Then they called Ziba, one of Saul's servants, to stand before David, and the king asked him, “Are you Ziba?” “Yes, I am your servant,” he replied.
  • 3. David asked: “Is there still anyone in Saul’s family to whom I can demonstrate God’s faithfulness?” Ziba replied, “There is still a son of Jonathan who is crippled in his feet.”
  • 4. “Where is he?” asked the king. Ziba replied, “He is in the house of Machir son of Ammiel in Lo-Debar.”
  • 5. Then King David ordered him to be brought from Lo-Debar.
  • 6. When Mephibosheth, son of Jonathan and grandson of Saul, appeared before David, he fell facedown to the ground. “Mephibosheth?” asked David. He replied, “Yes, I am your servant.”
  • 7. “Do not be afraid,” David said to him, “for I will certainly treat you kindly because of the friendship I had with Jonathan your father. I will restore all the land that belonged to your grandfather Saul, and you will always eat at my table.”
  • 8. Mephibosheth fell down and said, “Who am I, your servant, that you care about a dead dog like me?”
  • 9. Then the king summoned Ziba and said to him: “I have restored to Mephibosheth son of Saul everything that belonged to him and his family.
  • 10. You, your children and your servants will cultivate the land in his name. They will bring the harvest to guarantee the sustenance of the house of Mephibosheth. He will always eat at my table.” Ziba had fifteen sons and twenty servants.
  • 11. Ziba answered the king, “Your servant will do everything that my lord the king has commanded.” And so, Mephibosheth began to eat at David's table as one of his own sons.
  • 12. Mephibosheth had a young son named Micah. All the inhabitants of the house of Ziba became servants of Mephibosheth.
  • 13. Then Mephibosheth, who was crippled in his feet, took up residence in Jerusalem, for he always ate at the king's table.
