Ishbosheth is murdered

  • 1. Upon receiving the news of Abner's death in Hebron, Saul's son Ish-Bosheth lost his courage, and all Israel was alarmed.
  • 2. At that time, Ish-Bosheth had two trusted men, leaders of attack groups. One was called Baanah and the other Rechab. They were sons of Rimmon, from the city of Beeroth, from the tribe of Benjamin. Beeroth was considered part of Benjamin.
  • 3. When they heard of Abner's death, the inhabitants of Beeroth fled to Gitaim and still live there as foreigners to this day.
  • 4. (It is worth remembering that Jonathan, Saul's son, had a son crippled in his feet. He was only five years old when the news arrived from Jezreel that Saul and Jonathan had died. His nurse took him and fled, but, in her haste, dropped him, causing him to become lame. His name was Mephibosheth.)
  • 5. One day Rechab and Baanah, the sons of Rimmon, of Beeroth, came to the house of Ish-Bosheth at midday, when he was resting.
  • 6. They entered the house as if they were looking for wheat and, by surprise, attacked him, wounding him in the stomach, and then fled.
  • 7. The crime was committed while Ish-Bosheth was lying in his room. After killing him, they cut off his head and took it with them, traveling all night through the Arabah region.
  • 8. They came to Hebron carrying the head of Ish-Bosheth and said to David, “Here is the head of Ish-Bosheth, son of Saul, your enemy, who tried to take your life. Today the Lord has avenged our king and lord, Saul, and his descendants.”
  • 9. David answered his brothers Rechab and Baanah, sons of Rimmon and Beeroth, “I swear by the name of the Lord, who has delivered me from all my troubles:
  • 10. When a man brought me the news that Saul was dead, thinking he was bringing me good news, I killed him in Ziklag as a reward for the message he brought!
  • 11. Now these wicked men have killed an innocent man in his own home and in his own bed! I will punish them and eliminate them from the face of the earth for shedding his blood!”
  • 12. Then David gave orders to his soldiers, and they killed Rechab and Baanah. Then they cut off their hands and feet and hung their bodies by the Hebron pond. However, Ish-Bosheth's head was buried in Abner's tomb in Hebron.
