Revenge of the Gibeonites

  • 1. During David's reign, there was a great famine that lasted three years. David sought guidance from the Lord, and the Lord revealed to him: “This famine came as a result of the violent acts committed by Saul and his family against the Gibeonites.”
  • 2. Then the king summoned the Gibeonites and spoke to them. (The Gibeonites were not Israelites, but remnants of the Amorites. The Israelites had made an agreement with them by oath, but Saul, with exaggerated zeal for Israel and Judah, tried to exterminate them.)
  • 3. David asked the Gibeonites, “What can I do for you? How can I repair what has been done, so that the Lord’s inheritance may be blessed?”
  • 4. The Gibeonites replied, “We do not want silver or gold from Saul or his family, nor do we want the death of any Israelite.” David then asked, “What do you want me to do for you?”
  • 5. They replied, “Concerning the man who caused us so much suffering and who tried to exterminate us so that we would no longer have a place in Israel,
  • 6. We ask that seven of his descendants be handed over to be executed before the Lord, in Gibeah of Saul, on the mountain of the Lord.” “I will hand them over to you,” said the king.
  • 7. However, the king spared Mephibosheth, son of Jonathan and grandson of Saul, because of the oath that had been sworn between David and Jonathan, son of Saul, before the Lord.
  • 8. But the king took Armoni and Mephibosheth, the two sons whom Rizpah the daughter of Ahiah had given to Saul. Furthermore, he took the five sons that Merab the daughter of Saul had given to Adriel the son of Barzillai of Meholah.
  • 9. David handed them over to the Gibeonites, who executed them on the mountain before the Lord. The seven were killed at the same time, in the first days of the barley harvest.
  • 10. Then Rizpah, the daughter of Ahiah, took sackcloth and spread it on a rock. From the beginning of the harvest until the rain from heaven fell on the bodies, she did not allow the birds of the air to touch them by day, nor the beasts of the field by night.
  • 11. When David was told what Rizpah, daughter of Ahiah, Saul's concubine, had done,
  • 12. He went and recovered the bones of Saul and Jonathan from the citizens of Jabesh Gilead. (They had stolen the bones from the square of Bethshean, where the Philistines had hung them on the day they killed Saul on Mount Gilboa.)
  • 13. David brought from there the bones of Saul and his son Jonathan, along with the bones of the men who had been executed.
  • 14. Then they buried the bones of Saul and Jonathan in the tomb of Kish, Saul's father, in Zelah, in the land of Benjamin, and did everything that the king had commanded. After that, God answered prayers for the land of Israel.

War against the Philistines

  • 15. Later there was another battle between the Philistines and Israel. David and his soldiers went to fight the Philistines, and David was exhausted.
  • 16. At that moment, Ishbi-benob, a descendant of the Rephaim, made a promise to kill David. (The bronze tip of Ishbi-Benob's spear weighed about nine pounds, and he also carried a new sword.)
  • 17. But Abishai son of Zeruiah came to David's aid and killed the Philistine. Then David's soldiers swore an oath, saying, "You will never go out to war with us again, lest you put out the light of Israel."
  • 18. There was another battle against the Philistines in Gob. In this battle, Shibecai of Hushat killed Safe, another descendant of the Rephaim.
  • 19. There was yet another battle against the Philistines in Gob. In this confrontation, Elanan, son of Jaaré-Oregim, from Bethlehem, killed Goliath, from Gath. Goliath had a spear with a shaft similar to a weaver's.
  • 20. There was also another battle in Gath, where there was a man of great stature, with six fingers on each hand and on each foot, making a total of twenty-four fingers. He was also a descendant of the Rephaim.
  • 21. This man challenged Israel, but Jonathan, son of Shimea, David's brother, killed him.
  • 22. These four men were descendants of the Rephaim in Gath and were killed by David and his soldiers.
